Hello everyone,
I'm new at the forum and new to boating. Just got an 85 bayliner with an 85 force on it. Put it on the lake it seemed to start and run fine except that I felt that I could smell gas while having it on water. When i got back home there was about a teaspoon of oil at the bottom in the air intake. After looking around I also noticed a drop of oil on the bowl of the top carb. Also after running a while and shutting the motor off it tended to stall when I put it in gear at takeoff. I guess I need to adjust idle rpm. So I have some questions:

1.What causes the oil in the air intake and gas smell while running the boat? I figured they might be connected.
2. Where are the idle and high rpm needles on my carbs? I will probably have to adjust them.
3. In the timing and carb sinc sticky what exactly you do in step 6?
Don't want to sound dumb but I don't want to ruin this boat before I get some use out of it.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Gas smell?Check the bildge for gas??Some gas is gonna come out of the carbs.
The idle is controlled with the towershaft on the side of the motor. It's a long rod with a bend on top hooked to the trigger.
On the bottom a screw with a nut.Loosen nut and screw in to raise the rpm.s 750-800 ingear in the water.
NO high RPM needles.
Low speed air mixture screws on front top of each carb.Screw in to the bottom(gently)then out 1 and 1/16 turn and leave them there.
Do a compression/spark test.Manual? Get one.
Draining the lower unit oil, make sure the screw on the side DOESN"T get touched.Drain with an allen head set screw on the bottom front.

Re: 85 model 85hp force multiple question

I have had a similar problem with gas leaking from one or more of the carb float bowls. The problem in my case was caused by the pivot pin that the float hangs off of backing out of the pivot point that the float hangs from. This would cause the float to fall and gas to flood the bowl. I roughed up the end of the pin so that it would stay in the pivot. The problem has not returned.
