Hello
i just purchased a 18' sea ray with a destroyed 4 cylinder omc motor. I have already got a replacement motor to put in.
my question is what am i in for? any little tricks that anyone can share to make this project go a bit easier. would be more than appreciated.

So the 1st question question is do i have to remove the out drive before i can remove the engine?
the replacement motor still has part with the trim motor attached.
so if im looking at it right all i have to do is take the outdrive off remove the boot and pull it out.
i know it sounds easier than is.

  • Ist, welcome to a great Forum-- surprised no one has replied. Will try to help some with just a overview.
    My Background

    Work In process;
Restoring a 1986, 19 ft Searay Seville, 4.3 OMC Corbra--cracked engine, bad trim pump and rotten flooring that I bought.
    Repairs to date:
    Pulled lower Unit
Pulled Engine-note-tag all , lines, cables and electrical connections.
    Pulled Power Trim/Tilt unit
Removed all rotten wood --down to the keel boards
    Removed GasTank

    Next
Installed gas tank - after cleaning
    Installed new flooring l
    Replaced exhaust and drive bellows
    Replaced Gimbal bearing
    Replaced lower unit water pump
    Replaced Lower unit fluid

    Engine--
I ordered a long block as I was not sure of condition of old heads--got for a good price-I think- as I have not started yet :)

Ordered GLM exhaust manifold system--have read some bad thing about them-will wait and see

    Status:
    Floor in--
    Engine in
    Lower unit on
Rebuild Trim/Tilt pump and installed--checked out -OK
Still need to install the exhaust system and I'll be ready to Smoke test.

Bottom line for me -not very hard

If you run into problems -- search the forum-- you will find someone has the answer.

Might add--many will say to get a repair manual-I did
The Ist one was nothing but a good knee pad and the
the other one was not that much better--I found more help on this and other boat related forums.

Feel free to email me if you need help--may not have answer but can point you in right directions.

BTW Just need Skill,, Time and Money---oh yes Patience !
    Good luck on your Project!

If the boat is an 85 and has a stringer type drive, the drive doesn't have to be removed to do the engine swap as long as the outdrive is supported so it doesn't plunk down when the engine is slid forward. The engine can be unbolted from the intermediate housing and slid forward off the splined intermediate shaft.
