Having yet another trouble with my DT85 Suzuki outboard . It is oil injected. The problem seemed awhile back to be the carbs. Got the kits had them cleaned adn replaced and worked 100%. Now when i crank the motor its letting out rather more smoke than normal. I know smoke is good and it hasnt fouled out a plug yet. But just a bit much smoke. Not like super smokey but smokey and i can see it coming from out the water . Then ontop of that im smelling a strong gas smell of raw gasoline. I pulled the cowl off and removed the carb cover to inspect and i can see where gas has been flowing very little out of the carbs down into the cover. You cant see gas flowing out but u can see gas residue from the carbs down to the cover with a little puddlein between carb 3 and the plastic cover at the bottom. If anyone could be of help it would be greatly appreciated. Also another thing is i broke my key. The key is still intact it just broke out of the hard plastic piece any suggestions on getting a key for my boat. I do know the key has a number 20 on it. If that helps any. Anyways thanks for looking , Jerry

Re: 85 Suzuki Problem

I had a similar problem recently.

When I talked to the dealer about it the 1st thing he asked me was when I last changed the Thermostat.
2nd thing he did was to explain that if the thermostat was stuck open (which is how it is designed), that the motor could not reach the proper operating temp. and that it would just dump raw fuel into the exhaust.

Since I just got the outfit I hadn't even thought of checking it out as I had the motor running pretty good even though it had sat for 5+ yrs. but...soon as I got home I checked it. THERE WAS NO THERMOSTAT INSTALLED! The previous owner had taken it out (for unknown reasons).
Now that I have a new one in there...the motor runs smoother, and the fumes are GONE!

So check it or even just replace it to be on the safe side...you'll have the cover off anyway. The price was less than $30.00.

p.s. I have the same DT85.

Re: 85 Suzuki Problem

I don't know if he has already cleaned the carbs.

In my case...I had done all of that already up to and including replacing the fuel pump, filter AND housing, ALL of the fuel lines (including those running from the tank to the motor), and replaced the vacum lines as well. I still didn;t get the proper performance and economy so I changed the only thing left....the thermostat. So far so good.

Re: 85 Suzuki Problem

Also i just ordered the Seloc online subscription manual & tune up off of here. Im just hoping that i did not pick the wrong manual. I picked the 1995 Suzuki DT85 but it asked for jets or 3 cyl 2 stroke which is what my motor is. I am pretty new and my outboard is a 3cyl 2 stroke. So did i picked the right one?lol thanks Jerry

that manual is okay ,a service manual is just for your motor more detail.First take your thermostat out boil a pot of hot water open the spring alittle and place the end of some thread in and close. Now hold the piece of thread, make sure it;s atleast 10inch long and dip thermostat in hot water don't let it touch bottom of pot, just under the hot water. If it's good it will open up and will drop tp bottom.if not then replace.I have a manual for your motor just ask if you need anything.Coach!
