85 Yami pro V 150 4 stroke - oil on skeg

After my last 2 outings last season, I noticed that there was gear case oil on the skeg. It seams to be exiting where the prop meets the housing. I checked the oil level, very little lost. Is this normal for this engine or is this the beginning of a seal breakdown? Is it safe to operate if I keep checking it after each outing and topping it off if it's only losing the same amount?

I believe first you need to figure out what you have. A Pro V or Four Stroke? Is it engine oil, gear oil or 2 stroke oil?

First Capt, I thank you for responding. The eng cowl reads "Yamaha ProV 150", also the manufacture plate on the leg reads "ProV 150J code 6J9L". It runs on straight fuel, There is an oil tank on the rear of the boat that pumps oil into the eng and mixes as it run. Is there another way to tell what I have?
The oil on the skeg seems to be lower unit gear case oil, but I'm not absolute bout that. Each time I checked it after a run (about 1.5 hr run time) it was down no more than an oz. Also you mentioned eng oil. Is there a place on the eng that holds eng oil? If there is where would the dip stick be?
Outboards are new to me (my first boat). I really apreaciate the insite you guys give, Again THANK YOU MUCH.

You said 4 stroke and what you have is a 2 stroke. So you have no crankcase oil. What color is the oil leaking? Black or clean like in the lower unit? If black then it's just exhaust carbon that is being washed down the exhaust stack. If its clean oil then you have a leaking lower unit seal.

you can tell the difference by smell also, they are definitely different in smell

Now I'm confused. If this is a 2 stroke shouldn't I be mixing oil and gas in the gas tank? Will I harm the eng if I keep running straight gas?

There is an oil tank on the rear of the boat that pumps oil into the eng and mixes as it run.

This statment would make me believe you know it is a 2 stroke, but it Sounds like you need to read up on your outboard motor, try to find a owners manual for it or one like it as that one is kind of old and you may have a hard time finding the manual for it

if you do not know what you have what kind of oil have you been putting into the oil tank?
It should be a good quality marine 2 stroke oil

on 2 strokes there should be an oil tank on the motor under the cowling that gets filled by a pump located in the oil tank on the boat hull.

By the way, most all lower unit leaks I have seen cause water to get into the unit and mix with the oil and cause it to become milky looking and over filling it with the mix.
How are you checking the level of oil?

99, I seriously believed it was a 4 stroke. The person I brought it from said thats what it was. Being my first boat with no past experience, I believed him. I haven't had to add oil yet thou he did leave a container of oil on the boat and explained where and when to add. You're spot on with the tank under the cowl and on the boat. Maybe what confused me is that my friend has an old 40 hp merc 2 stroke and he has to mix oil in his gas tank. I will try to find an owners manual.
I was checking the gear case oil by removing the top screw and simply adding oil. This wknd I'll drain it and check for water. I will also run it and try to determine what type of oil is leaking. Thanks for your help, I'd be lost without you guys.

Your motor is a 2 stroke motor. The seperate oil tank is where the 2 stroke motor oil is added. The motor is designed to mix the oil from the tank, with gas from the gas tank - so that you don't have to premix the fuel/oil like your friend has to do. You just need to frequently monitor your setup to ensure that the oil pump mechanism is working. If it ever quits working, you will no longer get oil to your engine, and it will burn up in a hurry! I believe you will have a smaller oil tank on the motor, under the cowling. Your bigger tank pumps oil to the smaller tank, and the oil in the smaller tank is what then gets mixed with gas...

keep eading and learn as much as you can. 150 is a nice motor. I would add oil to your gas tank so you run about a 100 to 1 mix, or better yet 50 to 1 which is what you engine is supposed to run at. do you have an oil level gauge so you know when you are getting low? I had an 82 suzuki 75hp very strong motor simple to take care of once you know its needs. By runnning double oil you may foul aplug now and then but there much easier and cheaper than a motor.

Styles, That's exactly what I'm doing; reading as much as I can. I've purchased 3 repair manuals and a 4th is in the mail. Not sure I want to add more oil than specs call for. I was told that too much oil lowers octane and makes the eng run poorly. I don't have an oil gauge (but am interested in installing one), only a buzzer. I make sure both tanks are full before I leave the dock.

Do not run double oil in any engine. Oil causes the combustion temps to rise because oil burns hotter than the fuel and can cause engine damage. It will also cause coking of the pistons and cylinders. The only time one runs double oil is during the break in period and that is only for one tank of fuel.
