Please help... I have a 1985 Chrysler Force Outboard (85HP) and am trying to replace the impeller. I have taken all the bolts out of the lower end which I can see but the unit is still attached to something internally. Does anyone know how I can get the lower end apart ? Thanks for the help !!!

Did you disconnect the shift linkage? Is the lower unit a one piece or two piece? If it is a one piece there is a screw and lockwasher located in the exhaust snout.

Thanks for the quick reply. The shift linkage pin and cotter have been removed. I removed the exhaust snout and bolt (I think is a one piece).. The unit seems to be loose but maybe the driveshaft inside is still connected to something. Does the propeller shaft need to be removed first ? Thanks again !!

Re: 85HP Chrysler Force impeller replacement

Thanks for the reply... I will try that... I bought the boat 3 years ago from my cousin and I know he had it for atleast 3-4 years. The impeller was never replaced and the lower unit hasn't been taken apart, so I'll try the mallet. I just wanted to make sure the propeller shaft wasn't holding the unit together or anything like that. Thanks again..

there is a bolt underneath the snout at the very tip of housing.

best thing ive used for that is dynamite.

sounds weird but it works like a charm. duct tape a full stick to the side of the power head and then whammo. no more force.

myoutboards,

what type of engine do you own?
(i own a pair of '89 force 85HP)

how many times has it ever broken down or failed to start?
(neither of mine have ever broken or failed to start)

how much per year do you spend on maintenance including routine items such as impellers, fuel bulbs, spark plugs, gearcase oil, etc?
(over entire life of engine I have avergaed under $50 per year per engine including new impellers every spring)

perhaps you just have a different set of criteria. One where a motor that never breaks and costs almost nothing to maintain is considered a bad piece of engineering?

Granted, if you want a motor that the mercury dealer can maintain without destroying it in the process .. then you should look for something other than a force. But if you are a competent mechanic who does your own maintenance, then there is no cheaper way to get a reliable outboard.

so bugger off.

and, oh, by the way, when you calculate how much your engine has cost you to own and maintain ...
that $50 per year includes batteries, steering, control cables, and propellers.

I'm looking forward to your response.
