I have an 85HP force (1987) on my 17' Proline. Its an old boat, but in great shape.

I have had this motor for about 4 years and it has provided me with trouble free service.

I do a lot of routine maintanence like lower unit oil, plugs, prop shaft greasing, lube grease fittings, WD-40 the exterior.... I had the water pump changed last season and flush every time it comes out of the water.

My question is do I really need to do anything else? I don't know much about fuel systems. I check the screen filter, always run good gas with a 50:1 mix of Quicksilver Premium 2 cycle oil.

I have read a lot in these forums about decarb and periodic adustments.

Should I not mess with anything that isn't broken, or is this de-carb a requirement?

I run the boat a lot since its in a slip and always take it out weekly for flushing, hull cleaning etc...

Comments appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, decarb is important. The routine interval is every 60hours of operation with the spray type. This is about the same for plugs,so decarb before installing new plugs.

Re: 85HP Force 1987

Thanks for the tip, but one more question?

I went to the boat store last night and looked at the cans of decarb. It says to spray it in the carbs and run the motor at high idle for 15 minutes.

Since, I don't have the option of reving my engine without it going in gear, how do I perform the decarb??????

I just have forward/neutral/reverse. I can't pull out the throttle to make it rev after started. It just idles normally.

Suggestions????

Thanks a bunch.

You should have increased compression and engine "breathing" due to cleaner exhaust. This will also prolong the lifespan of the ol eggbeater. Don't forget to replace the plugs after the decarb, because they will be nasty.
