I have just acquired a 85HP Force Motor on a boat I got. It is a 1986 Bayliner. I was wondering how I go about getting information on motor like year and all of that. It looks original to the boat but want to check on it so if I need parts.
also was wondering where I could find a downloadable service manual. the boat will turn over but will not crank unless you spray starting fluid in carbs. Im new to outboards so any help would be appreciated. I looked for a model number but dont know where to look.

Not aware of any on line manuals. There are a lot of original factory manuals available on the auction sites though. Also aftermarket manuals are available. The ones by Clymer seem to be better than the ones by SELOC.

Spraying with starter fluid is not the best way to get'em started. 2-stroke motors have the lubrication mixed in with the fuel. When you spray straight starter fluid, depending on how much you spray, it can wash away the lubricating oil/fuel mixture. Are you familiar with the operation of the choke and neutral fast idle position of the throttle? This is the key to getting it started.

The model number and serial are usually on a sticker on the transom mounting bracket. It's sometimes missing or faded enough to where you can't read it. Post some pictures of the motor with the cover off. You can usually tell approximate year by the ignition system and carb set up.

As PNW mentioned, you need to search the forum for starting procedures. You need to make sure you always have cooling water (muffs) attached when starting or running the engine. It doesn't take a minute to damage water impeller and consequently the engine when ran without cooling water. Another good practice for newly acquired outboard motor is to replace the water impeller right off the bat and also to check on the condition of the LU gear oil. These two items are critical for the continued operation of the engine without damaging it.

Re: 85HP Force wont crank. Need information on Motor

To engage the choke you turn the ignition key to the ON or START position and push in gently on the key. If you turn the key to the ON position and push in and release repeatedly, you should hear a clicking noise coming from the motor. This is the choke solenoid engaging/disengaging.

The Neutral fast idle position is engaged by either pushing in on the button at the throttle handle pivot point and pulling the throttle handle out, or by simply pulling out the throttle handle out (towards the center of the boat) and pushing the throttle handle forward. The handle should only pop out about a quarter of an inch. This will enable you to throttle the motor up but not engage the gear case.

Here is a starting procedure that I have used and seems to work well.

1. Squeeze the primer bulb until it gets firm. Usually 3 - 5 squeezes.
2. Pull the throttle handle out and push it forwards about 3/4 of the way from maximum.
3. Turn the key to the start position while pushing inwards to engage the choke. Only engage the choke for about 4 seconds max on each attempt. It's very easy to flood the motor.
4. If the motor fires, be prepared to pull the throttle back to keep the motor at about 1500- 2000 RPM's until it warms up ( a minute or so).
5. Once the motor is idling OK, return the throttle handle to the neutral position (straight up and down) and it should pop back in. Squeeze the throttle release button and push the throttle forward (or reverse depending on which direction you want to go)to engage the gear case to move forward/reverse.

Pump pic.
If it only starts with starting fluid?
Take the plugs out and do a compression test.

did a compression check
110 on number 1
95 on number 2
about 80 on number 3

what could be my problem I am getting fuel after cleaning fuel pump it was horrible. and i cleaned all three carbs. but its still not cranking. occasionally i get a backfire like i said i am new to outboards and have checked all i know to check. I am assuming the compression test isnt to good of results. can anyone tell me what it should be.

Should be all about the same.
With a good gauge an 86/85 should be about 145-155#
You use a screw in gauge?
Hot battery?
Try again with a different gauge and let the motor turn over at least 5-7 times to get a good reading.
