Re: 85hp force won't fire
Tsnyder,
Just a simple tip that may help you. Behind the kill switch, is there two wire clip connections? That's what I have for my '86 125 HP Force. I took off the two wire connections, checked/cleaned for corrosion, and by accident, reversed the wires when connecting, thereby bypassing the kill switch altogether. If this does not work, switch wires back to original connections. It's worth a try.
Do you have the cheap plastic cap-type device attached to a string and clip (the clip is supposed to be attached to the driver (ha ha)) that covers the spring loaded kill switch? It's very poor engineering because much of the time the tension of the spring of the kill switch moves the safety cap just enough to activate the kill switch even though the cap is still over it. I can understand safety switch kill devices for PWCs, but for my 18' Bayliner Capri? Ridiculous. My worst experience with a kill switch problem was during high speed cruising. I had people in the bow section of my boat, the safety cap slipped, kill switch activated and could have killed my passengers. It was like slamming on the brakes in a car. Passengers almost got flung forward over the bow and most likely would have been runned over. So much for safety devices.
Also a second tip, which is simple, check to make sure all wire connections are clean and tight on your outboard motor. I've had an opposite problem of not being able to turn off the motor due to a couple of wires coming loose.
