I am stumped. I have searched all threads and found really good information but does not seem to apply to my situation. I fear sounding stupid here, but this is my problem. I have all bolts out even the one under the steering drift plate. I believe I am hung up on the shifter shaft. It says in plenty of threads to remove 3/8 bolts at the shift linkage but mine is held on with a rivet not a bolt, and what is rivetted to the linkage is a plunger type of part that appears to be 1/2 in diameter and about an inch and a half long. Then the 1/4 inch shift shaft is connected to the plunger. So even if I did remove the plunger looking part from the linkage I would not be able to pull it down through where the shift shaft is routed through since it is the size of the shift shaft. Thank you in advance for all your expert advice.

Re: 85hp Johnson Removing Lower Unit

There is a bolt there. I was in the right spot however i was under the impression that the bolt was actually holding the rod to the linkage when in fact there is a bolt half way up the linkage where the linkage swivels and this in point clamps the linkage over the shift rod at the top via what appears to be rivets, (actually are not rivets).

Thank you for the help, all the other posts I looked at made me think that the linkage was actually secured to the rod via a bolt at the shift rod. My bad. Thank you for the help. Hopefully this will be a better description of how the linkage is secured for those who have the same difficulty as myself.
