85hp merc. thunderbolt ign.

Hi. I just bought this and I was ripped off. I don't know how to identify the year or what ign. system it has. It won't fire on #3 or #4. Both of those coils have no current. #1 and #2 do. It looks like it's 1 big coil pack, but I'm not sure. The power wires come from the other side of the motor from what seems to be a big module. Any help would be apperciated Thanks Arny.

Amy, You likely have a post 1975 Merc. A serial number will provide the year. The ign system is very likely a modern one called ADI. The CDIElectronics web site will have a test for the ign. The ign system is made up of several parts. There are 4 coils, a switchbox, and stator and a trigger. The troubleshooting test will narrow down the issue to a part.
