k so here we go

I have an 84 85 hp Chrysler outboard which starts up great but once I stop the engine and then go to restart it once I put it in gear forward she dies on me ,but the weird thing if i restart the motor and then drop it in reverse then forward it works ? weird!!!

Also does anyone know what the lower unit screw above the drain screw is for ?
Thank you
Dave

Re: 85hp out board issue

DONT TOUCH THAT SCREW! That's the pivot pin for the shift yoke.

As far as idle, first clean the plugs. Then, check the idle speed. It needs to be 700-750 in forward gear, in the water. Any less and the engine tends to stall when shifted into forward. The reason it does not happen in reverse is because the prop is so inefficient turning the wrong way that it doesn't load the engine. Then when you shift quickly through neutral to forward, the RPM is a tad higher and the engine will now continue to run quite happily.

Idle stop adjustment screw is on the bottom of the linkage tower and bears against the block. Screw in slightly to raise idle speed then re-tighten the locknut.

Re: 85hp out board issue

Hello Frank
Thank for getting back to my post. Unfortunetly last week I pulled that pivot pin out by mistake while changing the fluild It went back in but now have that problem. What is the best way to know that the pin is in the right place? Should I take it out and put the motor in gear and place the pivot pin back in ?>

Thank you
Dave

NO! do not remove it again. Especially, do not shift with the pin removed.

Shifting has no relation to idle except as I explained above. If you did not move anything and replaced the pin, and if the engine now shifts into bith forward and reverse, the pin is bac in the pivot and functioning correctly.
