85hp WE-9 Carb, What is this jet??

Hi all,

In my previous post I stated I have one cylinder not getting gas. When taking off the carbs I noticed these jets on the outside, right side (in boat looking at carbs), of the carbs. No. 24 in the picture below. What are these jets for?? I noticed the carb on the cylinder that isn't getting gas that someone has soldered over the hole and redrilled the jet much smaller in diameter than originally (I'd say half the size of the original hole). The other two carbs jets are untouched. Would this have anything to do with that cylinder not getting gas?? Should I replace it with an original jet??

Thanks for the help. James

Whether the right size or not you should replace it.std size is .072.Higher altitudes require different sizes.

Thanks.! Will do. You wouldn't happen to know what that jet is used for would you?

I think I may have missed something. The jet I was talking about was the high speed jet of course not visable on the out side.Don't know that carb butwould guess that is some sort of vent.Thecarb may have been flooding so gas came out the vent.Someone may have tried to restrict the flow by making the hole smaller.Shouldn't bother unless the little hole gets plugged.
I have the same exploded view of the carb that piece is not labeled.

Yeah, took a little while to find a schematic with that jet on it. My Clymers doesn't show it either. It's a .060" jet I believe. Has to be a vent like you said. I think I'll replace it or open it up to the original diameter. I'll find out what it does when I break into these carbs I guess. Thanks for the help.

Re: 85hp WE-9 Carb, What is this jet??

That jet is an air bleed. It communicates with the passage that the dip tube (#9) is in. It functions to regulate the air pressure within the high speed circuit. Closing the hole or reducing its size would lead me to expect the carb to run richer at high speeds. So, perhaps the previous owner was having a lean run problem and attempted to correct it this way without proper calibrating equipment.

A LITTLE knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Thanks Frank. I'm going to put it back original and rebuild the carbs (if the kits ever come in) and go from there. Knowing where this boat comes from, if it didn't leave the factory that way then I'm certain a marine shop or a "mechanic" did it.
