Dave: Has anyone showed you the correct starting procedure? With a cold start, you must pull out the control handle or press the button in the center and push the handle forward until it stops. This is cold start/ fast idle/ warm-up position. Now, push in the key and hold while cranking to choke the engine. She should fire after one or two turns. Let warm up a couple of seconds or so and return the handle to upright position. Now the engine will shift and speed up normally.

Mine isn't as picky as that. I pump the bulb until it is hard, crank the engine with the choke on until she fires, but doesn't start, usually only 2 or 3 revs. Crank again with choke off and she usually starts right up. I've done this spring walleye fishing breaking ice on the way out and never had to use the fast idle. I'm afraid if I used that, I'd probably flood it out.

Re: 85hp wont start when cold

the control handle hes refering to is your throttle lever, most setups you can pull the throttle lever towards your hip which will deingage it from shifting the lower unit then push it forward to give you more idle gas for starting, your ignition key should push in ,when it does you should hear a click from the motor thats your choke solinoid energizing hold it in and start the motor up 10-20 seconds motor should fire right up,hope that helps!!
