I did a search, but came up with nothing. I have a 1975 85HP Johnson, had the motor running earlier this year just, now today, it starts runs for a minute or so then shuts down, it will start up again and shut down, I did this for like 10 minutes. The motors on muffs so I can't really rev it up, any ideas or should I just get it in the water?
Thanks
Joe

When it starts it runs good so I'm sure the plugs are OK (no miss) I have no fast idle lever at the Helm, its a 1987 Skeeter Bass boat, and theres only a key in the dash, and it will keep running if I choke it when it starts to die.

Sounds to me like your low-speed jets need a good cleaning.

Re: 85hp ???

Has anyone had any luck using a carb cleaner in the fuel tank? Or is that a no no, my motor has started and keeps running now, but I was thinking of adding something to the gas to help clean the carbs.
Thanks

It might work and it might destroy your engine. You should clean the carburetors properly. If one high speed jet out of the four is clogged, that cylinder will run without fuel (and oil). Or if it is only half clogged, that cylinder will run lean--that can be just as bad or worse sometimes.
