Re: 85hp

Buy a tube or (bottle with pump) of outboard gearcase (or lower end) lube. It will be 85-90wt.

Pump the grease into the lower (drain/fill) hole with the top (vent) plug out.

When the gearcase is full grease will overflow out the vent hole. Replace the vent plug, with a fresh gasket, before you take the spout out of the fill/drain hole. Then replace the drain/fill plug with a fresh gasket.

Good call JB on replacing the gaskets' as a lot of people skip this part and end up with water in the lower end and spend days trying to find out where it's coming from.

+1 on all of the above. I also suggest using anti seize on the drain, fill and vent plugs. If these seize up in your lower, they are a pain to remove.

Are the gaskets fairly generic, or must they be purchased from a marine supplier?

They are actually plastic washers and you can get them from any Mercury/Quicksilver dealer. Sometimes they can be found at West Marine.
