Hello, I'm new to boating. My Johnson is over rated for my boat and sits low in water. It starts well and idles. The motor will go to about 20 mph and then either cuts out or slows right down, then it will surge for a few seconds then back down. I have bought new plugs and would appreciate it if someone would let me know the gap for them. Can anyone help with this problem? Thanks

Gap plugs @.030in.
When the power falls off and you have the throttle up, give the primer a good bump and see if the power picks up or not. I suspect it will. If it does you have a fuel delivery problem. Carburetor, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel tank vent closed, crimped fuel line, leaking fitting, etc.

If the primer doesn't have any effect, start looking at ignition stuff.

c/6

Hooty

harve,

Actually, if it's crossflow, gap them to .040".

harve did you have it winterized properly if gas is left in the carb for three to four weeks it evoporates and froms a varinsh inside the carb chucks of this varinsh breaks up and cloggs the ports and this make it look like a fuel starvation probelm a pro can tell right off good luck looks like your nect move is rebuilding the carbs
