We busted and replaced the strap fitting on the starboard side piston on tilt. filled up the resevoir and tried pump. ran it till it picked up motor and lowered it. now tilt motor runs but it doesnt go up or down. we (me and my 16yr old son) were told that it was self bleeding(?). we tried loosening the fittings on lines and purging air. that helped for one or two raises/lowers.kept filling resevoir..what are we doing wrong...? or is it something else???

Fill it, run it up and down a few times.
Then refill, run it up and down, repeat till it is full.
You shouldn't have to loosen any lines.
But it will take a bit of time to replace all the air with oil.

no need to loosen any lines - ever. as you cycle system up and down the air gets pushed back into resevoir and the bubbles float to surface. a completely dry system takes about 1 pint to fill.

1) lower engine fully. top off resevoir to hole.

2) raise engine until it runs out of fluid (stops going up). top off resevoir again.

3) engine should now fully raise. go all the up and then all the way down. top it off again.

4) pre-1992 systems should now have plenty of fluid for operation. replace filler plug and cycle 2-3 times. if problem persists then it is something other than air bubbles in fluid.
