Re: 86' 150 XR2 Advance module

I'm not understanding the test procedure for doing the DVA readings on the stator and trigger. I need to get a simple, easy to understand, detailed instruction on testing these components. I plan on buying an adapter to read the peak voltages. Is there an article that will tell me, step, by step how to get these readings. Something in layman terms. You guys lost me back there when we got to talking about sign waves, occilliscopes and the like. Try to keep it simple for those of us that don't have all that experience. I can't stand the thought of going to some marina to get help and get took to the cleaners. I just need someone that will get me on the right path. I'm off tomorrow and plan on giving it another shot. I'll probably start with the compression test, then the spark test. All the ohm test so far read good. Thanks in advance for the support. Eddie:)
You do not have to disconnect the wires to test.http://www.outboardignition.com/page39.asp

If you have not bothered the flywheel pointer or assuming no one else has moved the pointer on the cover, using this procedure http://www.themarinedoctor.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1209250610 you will be able to set your top end timming, set it to 23 degrees.
After you set top end timming set idle timming to four degress by adusting the idle screw.
Do all of this with all plugs out except number one, thats the one your timming light goes on,make sure your other plugs are grounded to the engine block and as far as I know just about any timming light will work and yes the harness has to be connected.
Get someone to turn the key to crank the engine over while you set the timming.Make sure you have a fully charged battery and the fuel disconnected cause it will start with only one plug in it and you dont want that.
Set timming while cranking the motor out of the water.
If you get no light while cranking the engine,it may be that the number one cylinder is not geting fire.
I would do the dva check first.

Unless the reading is off, then you have to isolate the fault. (disconnect parts)

CDI electronics will have an easy to follow and comprehensive test procedure on their page. There's also one in the Mercury Manual.
I also agree with j_martin,If you are going to do your own work on your engine, save yourself some greif and buy the manual.

I've got the Clymers manual. Is it a good reference. I also see some good troubleshooting help on the CDI site. I take it there products are top quality since the site was recommended on this forum. I ordered the peak voltage tester today. Thanks guys I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Mercury Manual.... Mercury Manual. The "others" are a good replacement for the no longer available Sears and Sawbuck catalog.

Ok, I will use the Clymers manual and the article I got from CDI. My compression is between 115 and 120 on all six cylinders. No. 1 is on the top starboard side which is the right side facing forward, correct? There was a good article on the outboardignition.com site too. I'm still waiting on my Peak voltage tester to test the stator and trigger output. Thanks

Re: 86' 150 XR2 Advance module

all cylinders read between 115 and 120 compression. Still can't get my timing light to work on this engine. I'll buy a new one if I need to. Will a regular automotive timing light work? I'm still waiting on my DVA peak voltage tester. Thanks...... Eddie

Re: 86' 150 XR2 Advance module

I got my my tester. Now I heard that the engine don't fire all cylinders in neutral. Is it true? This might account for my timing light not working when I tried to static time the XR2. Just curious.

Re: 86' 150 XR2 Advance module

Got it. My test results reveals a bad switch box. 0 voltage from the green wires on one box to coils. The other box reads around 170-175 to the other bank. Stator and trigger voltage read good according to the CDI write up I used as a guide. Now my question is what is the most reliable switch boxes to buy. I read CDI has a "high performance" box and a good report with some mechanics. I like running fast. Maybe I need a quality box. What your opinion. Thanks for all the help. I'm ready to order my boxes as soon as I make up my mind which is best.

The CDI replacement for the original Merc part # is a fine replacement box for any motor that is not spun up over 7000

I ordered the CDI switch boxes. I will let you know when I have them on. The bad switch box had my 1-3-5 bank dead. I guess that why my timing light didn't work when I tried to set the static timing. I can't wait to hear this XR2 run right again. Thanks for the info.

Re: 86' 150 XR2 Advance module

Did you disconnect the Bias wire linking the two switchboxes and then test for spark again?

A bad Bias on one box will prevent spark on the 'other' box when actually it is the sparking box that is bad. Factory recommends replacing both boxes, CDI boxes are hardier units and if one fails in the future it is safe to only replace the one. Both factory boxes will spark fine on a three cyl motor, do not throw them away just yet as most any of the 75 - 90 HP triples could use them.

Re: 86' 150 XR2 Advance module

I disconnected the Bias wire and still had no spark from the inner box. I put the new CDI boxes on today and that has my engine running so much better. Now my timing light works. I static timed my engine. It starts good. I'm ready for a test run to the lake. Hope you all have a Merry Christmas. Thanks for all the advise. I look forward to reading the forum in the future.
