86 15hp evinrude 100/1 mixture

I just bought an 86 15hp evinrude long shaft it has a sticker that says 100/1 oil mixture. Is this true ? Ran it at 50/1 to test it out before buying ran great

OMC issued service bulletins regarding this years ago. The 100:1 tanks suplied with that engine were recalled/discontinued and were not to be used for mixing at that ratio. They recommended the ratio be premixed at 50:1. You should run 50:1 in the engine. While the engines performed fine at that ratio, they found that if left for some time (over the winter) that the residual oil on the internals was so thin, that the critial parts (cranks, bolts, etc) would rust over time, causing significant damage.

The fuel/oil ratio was changed to 50:1 or 2% by OMC Service Bulletin #2162 in March of 1986. This change was for all recreational, commercial and extended heavy-duty use motors originally approved for 100:1.

Make sure you remove the sticker, so someone down the line doesn't read it.

Did they also recommend a change in plug/gap to help burn additional oil?

No change is recommended in the service bulletin except to 50:1; that was only for motors that had been temporarily rated for 100:1.

Yes .040 for Johnson 15Hp Seahorse 1985
One spark plug for lower RPM use and one for higher RPM use both gap at .040.
But this is for my 1985 Johnson 15HP Seahorse with 100:1 mix yours might be different.

The 100 -1 was sufficient lubrication for most motors while running. The bulletin had nothing to do with lubrication while running and everything to do with storage of the motor (again legal talk so to not get involved in a major recall).
