86 15hp Evinrude Sputters when in reverse??

Hello, I de-carbed my outboard 2 days ago. I sprayed the whole can of engine tuner into the carb while idling per instructions on the can. Shut it down, waited a day. Ran it in a trash can till the smoke cleared. Went fishing today and ran it all day, No problems. Put it in Reverse and it sputters and stalls. Have no idea what would cause this...Please Help....Warren

Warren, If your motor is still smoking to any degree, backing down will suck up the smoke into the carb causing it to cough and hack. nevjb

This is my first De-Carb and I ran a half tank of gas through it during the day. Didn't see any exess smoke. Didn't try it without the cover. If it was sucking up smoke in reverse shouldn't it be choking while idling in forward? When in the forward gear it runs better than it ever did....Warren

Hi Warren...<br /><br />Just fer grins, check your plugs for correct gap and that they are servicable. Gap is .030.<br /><br />Look over the carb and you will see a roller. This is the cam follower roller. It opens the throttle plates at the right time in engine timing. If you look at the cam, this is the curvy plate the roller rests against, you will see a timing mark. When this mark lines up with the roller, the throttle plates should just begin to open. Adjust the allen head screw on the roller link in or out to adjust roller setting. You will have to remove the carb cover to do the above adjustment. Motor don't have to be running either.

Warren,<br /> I had a 1965 Evinrude 18 HP before It was weired<br />that at a certain gas station brand gas made it run bad. If its a older motor like mine it runs better on Mid-Grade or Better. also could ajust your idle mixture for the poorer grade's of gas.But its just easy to use higer octane gas.

I have been using the mid grade gas from 76. If it was the fuel, shouldn't it be sputtering in forward gear also? I'm going to put it back in the the barrell tomorrow and let it run for a while. Hopefully, whatever it is will burn out....Warren
