The powerhead was taken off and put back on. Is there enough room to move it around with the 9 bolts loose?

The reason I ask is because the shift rod hole is 1/2 hole in front of the pin hole. I tried moving the rod up and down but that doesn't affect anything unless it is straight up and down, which is higher than the required measurement.

What else can I do? Thanks.

Set the shift rod height to spec. Disconnect the shift cable at the engine. Connect the shift rod. Now adjust the shift cable trunnion (the threaded barrel) so the cable aligns exactly with the attachment point on the shift linkage. If you have to move the shift linking on the engine to connect the cable you are doing it wrong. With the engine in neutral and the shift lever on the control box in neutral you adjust the cable so it is in exact alignment.

Don't have a repair manual here, but in the parts book it looks like the shiftrod offset goes to the rear, not the front. That woud account for about 1/2 inch.Maybe your local library has a repiar manula you can check.

To answer your first question, no, you cannot move the powerhead. The goose neck on the shift rod should be toward the front of the engine. Turn your shift rod 1/2 turn.

Walker,

The first two suggestions above are what I was doing. Not sure what you mean by goose neck forward, but I've got the hole positioned so it is closest to the back and pin hole, otherwise it would be too far forward. Still wondering. Thanks.

Dosen't the top of the shift rod have a bend in it? It can only go one way and work properly.

I'm not real sure what you are describing as your problem. The shift rod from the lower unit hooking to the shift linkage on the motor or what???

The measurement from the top surface of the lower unit (alongside of the shift guide housing) to the center of the top shift rod hole is extremely critical, and MUST be made with the unit in neutral. Measeurements follow for the various length 1986 40hp etc models.

1986 - 40, 45, 50, 55hp = (S) 15-29/32" - - (L) 40, 45, 50, 55hp = 20-29/32" plus/minus 1/32" Have the shift rod in neutral and the offset to the rear.

Yes, I am trying to connect the shift rod to the part that moves it up and down.

I was thinking about it when I realized that instead of taking the lower unit off each time to adjust the shift rod, I could slide the cam over and turn it up or down that way. I don't have anything to measure that close with so just figured a little less than 20". I will try going up and down one turn at a time while still hooked up.

This motor has been a lot of trouble trying to figure out. It's so hard to get at.

Thanks for you patience.

I'm happy to tell you all that I got it right this time. First I measured using a tape and ruler. I had the tip turned in the wrong direction too. I used the directions on how to adjust the shift cable too.

It seemed to work ok except for a rattle someplace. Anyhow, thanks a lot for the help.

That rattle could just be a $1000 mistake. You would only need to drop the lower unit one time to have that adjustment exactly where it belongs, after which you would know it's correct and any problems that might exist are elsewhere.

It's something that's worth doing right.
