86' 60hp t-stat question

I'm doing a cooling system overhaul for my father-in-law, and I'm confused about the t-stat. when I look at the part on this and other web sites it shows the old style t-stat like the one that is in my 71' 50hp and 59' 35hp. The t-stat that came out of this 60hp is bigger and is enclosed in brown plastic. The area of the head that the t-stat fits into is too big to accept the old small style t-stat. there is a part number on it (397056) but when i put it in a search box it comes up as not a good number. I don't want to order everything and have this be the one thing that holds me up, I'd like it to be a quick turn around.

Now it is possible that the picture of the part is wrong and I will get the correct one in the mail. I'm just not sure.

all i can find is oem 396987 or sierra 183557.

I found a photo of what I have. It's the fourth one down on the left.

after looking at some pictures of the part number 396987, I could see that its possible that it will fit. just wanted to make sure. thanks for the help TD
