86 90hp starting on eng stand gas can need to be level with eng?

Hello,
I currently have my eng on a eng stand and was trying to start it over the weekend, couldnt get it to start, gas can was on the ground primed it up bulb got hard but would not start moved the can onto a ladder and started right up, my question is does the gas can have to be level with the eng to get it primed? or do you think i may have an airleak.

i start mine all the time with can on ground.

It all depends on the motor, the fuel pump, the fuel lines, etc. The fuel pump isn't really designed to draw fuel from a source that far below the powerhead, and I wouldn't have any reasonable expectation that it would do so in most cases.
