86 alpha one question

Hi everyone in the forum.I am rebuilding a boat with a 1986 Mercruiser 170 that I do not know anything about.I noticed ,that when I hold the propellor and push it forward and back ward a slight play is felt and some noise is to be heard in the gear case.Otherwise the propellor rotates smoothly and the gearcase shifts.Could that be normal or it indicates some issues?Thanks in advance!

Ayuh,........ Welcome Aboard to the forums here at iboats,.......

There's about 1/8th" Play, fore + aft, in the Propshaft.........

Since you're there and messing around, pull the prop and grease the shaft.... gotta do it sometime so today is a good time.
