86 alpha sterndrive to a bravo 1 sterndrive?

I might be able to get a brandnew bravo 1 sterndrive.If i decide to upgrade the sterndrive this winter what else would need to be changed over?

pretty sure you need a complete inner and outer transom setup

What exactly are you you getting?

If all you're getting is a drive, you'll also need a gimbal assembly and trim cyls for a bravo....Your trim pump and steering hydraulics should switch over ok.

you should also get yourself a OEM service manual. What engine is this going to bolt to? You'll also probably need a bravo y-pipe, and bell housing, and if your engine does not have a raw water pump on it you'll need one of those too complete with mounting bracket etc. If it's 454 you may need the water pump with the fuel pump mounting on it or an electric fuel pump. You didn't say if it's fuel injected....probably not if it's the original engine.... I don't know what year the change came but you might have to drill 2 additional holes in the transom for the Bravo gimbal.

You're doing basically the same thing I did in going from the Cobra to the Bravo.....except I presume you want to keep your engine.

It's a 1986 searay 268 weekender with a 260 hp 5.7 liter mercrusier engine. Looking at building the engine up this winter.If the deal works out i will be able to get the bravo unit for less then what a new alpha unit will cost me.Then i could drop a bigblock in her if i wanted to without worrying about blowing the sterndrive unit apart.And it would be just the drive unit and cylinders.I figured i would need to change the gimble rings and transom support bracket.My current setup is raw water cooled

You will need the complete assembly inner and outter, not just the drive.

Well that's gonna big job to say the least. You will need to completely remove the engine and gimbal assy and replace it with a Bravo gimbal assy.

A Bravo won't bolt up to an Alpha gimbal.
