It seems that 90% of people on here wont buy anything thats not in perfect condition. or would advise against it.

But anyways. Heres a different boat Im looking at. Keep in mind we just got 12" of snow overnight, so the pics might looks sketchy to some. haha.

The pics are really big so I'll just put up the links

He said everything ran good. But fouled out the plugs when winterizing.
The previous owner replaced the floor but never put down carpet. It isnt the greatest job. but this doesnt bother me as long as the stringers and everything are fine. Which, I cant have checked unless its my garage. So that has me a little concerned. And it looks like he put in some type of spray foam?

Thoughts?

Run, don't walk! Playing the odds here, but I'd be willing to bet the transom is soft, the stringers are rotten, and the engine isn't going to run. You are going to have fun finding replacement parts and a mechanic that knows how to work on that force also.

Fouled out the plugs when winterizing? A 2-stroke? That there sounds like a convenient excuse for you to remember when it won't start next month. If you can fix engines and stuff, and enjoy tinkering and have time TO tinker, then it may be okay to buy if the price is low enough. However, if you're expectations are to USE it and do <ahem> "maintenance" as you go... I'd say keep looking...

Look down in the restoration forum. Neither of my boats looked nearly that bad, and were in need of a full 2000$ restore. I guarantee that needs it! It is outside in SNOW uncovered with an unglassed uncoated sarewed down deck. She's wet and rotten. Good project if you want to build a boat to your liking and have the time. And get it cheap!

Used and abused......... Unless you can get it for practically nothing, let 'er go........ Even then, you may have a lot of work a head of you to get it seaworthy...

Hes asking 2 grand. which is ridiculous in my opinion. I told him just by the pics. Maybe 750. and said that may go down after I see it in person. He said he would take that. Its located in Appleton (about an hour and a half from me)

Im looking at a different boat on Saturday. And there also another one that looks really well taken care of. but its a 73. But is asking about a grand over what I would like to spend...Hes an older guy so I doubt he will budge much on his price. We will see.

$2k? LOL LOL LOL!!! A rotted bayliner with a completely obsolete motor is barely worth $200. I'm all for a project but that's not a worthy candidate.

You didn't go shopping in the "TLC needed on Craigslist" thread did you?
That's a poster child for that thread if I ever saw one...
A mid 80's B-liner, with a hack job deck, and a ridiculous asking price to boot..

Run!!! This guy is completely unrealistic. Even at $750, all you are guaranteed is a motor that may be parts, and I assume a trailer in unknown condition. RUN!!!

Take your hard earned money elsewhere... ;)

Had the '83 version of that boat I bought brand-spankin' new; same power but different color scheme. Was a tad over $6k.
Lots of great memories and it was very reliable but of course it was new.

I am not anti-Bayliner at all but in all honestly, I would not take that boat you're looking at even if it was free. I'd keep looking.

Looking at pic #1, you can see the edge of the plywood that appears to be placed directly over the original? floor. You can also see the plywood is no good. You are going to be very disappointed if you buy that boat expecting to put it in the water and have fun.
You will find that the original floor is rotten, the stringers will be also, probably water logged foam etc......even for 750, I would bypass this one unless you already know it is rotten and you are looking to rebuild a boat. Even then, with an unknown condition motor I would not offer him more that a couple hundred for it. He was asking 2K and when offered 750 he said he would take that?
This tells me he knows it is a POS and just wants to offload it on you.

Can you post the pictures of the boats that you DIDN'T choose ????

Actually, I bought a boat that had/has some structural moisture issues that were discovered on the survey. Still decided to go ahead with the purchase as it was known and I felt it would be manageable, etc.. So, definitely not perfect.

Perfect or not, it is a matter of understanding the condition of the boat so that you know what you are buying. The condition could be horrible, and you still end up buying it, but at least you know what you are buying. There are lots of threads of folks who get surprised after the sale and end up spending $5k on a $2k boat.

So, the task at hand with this (or any boat) is to do as much as you can to understand the condition of the boat; then decide. Generally speaking, the seller is not a good source for information regarding the condition. They will give you the 'quick & easy' explanation of any problems. So, you will have to determine the condition of the boat yourself.

Another thing to consider is that value is based on comparison. Have you looked at enough boats to make a good comparison? If not, then look at some more. I don't think at $2k that particular boat is going anywhere right way.

Those are my pearls of wisdom for your search. Keep us posted.

This looks like a worth while boat. The motor and trailer, are worth the asking price. the boat is older but, looks good shape.

I'll leave the Bayliner alone ... $2k, wow.

It's not so much perfect condition - it's reality. There are too many things that will come back to haunt you later in getting a boat put back on the water. Bad floors suggest bad stringers, bad stringers (untouched) may well generate hull cracks - cracks grow over time and BAM! One day you're out on the water enjoying a run around the lake, pop it over some chop and next the thing you know the boats headed for Davy Jones' Locker ...

There are more boats in bad condition out there than in good condition. And a lot of the ones in bad condition are for sale on CL just needing a little TLC.

What's your budget for buying a boat?
