First boat ever. Bought Aug. 1 2001. I was the happiest person in the world. I bought it from the biggest liar in the world.

1st week, engine temperature too high. "it's just a bad gauge, I have one at home I'll give you" said the liar

2nd week, showing off boat to the wife, engine siezes. Towed in by police. Engine started after cooling down.

3rd week. Zebra mussels plugging water intake. engine siezes. cools down, restarts, get back to my slip.

next day, outdrive gears fly apart. no oil in outdrive.

4th week. outdrive rebuilt 1700.00 can. engine throws a rod.

5th week. put in used engine 1900.00 can.

6th week. new starter

7th week. new alternator

8th week. marina pulls floating docks from water so my boat has to come out.

I paid 12,000 for boat. I've spent almost 3,000 in repairs, and I,ve had less than 10 hours under power. Oh yea, the slip cost me 700.00 for 2 months.

Now that I've had time to reflect, I see that I have been stroked by anyone I thought was trustworthy. Is this an inherent quality in "marine mechanics?"

The boat had a 140 omc engine. The boat never went faster than 16 mph without red lining. It has been suggested the I put a V6 in it. I know someone who will sell me one.

I want to put a 350 in, and I need to know the following for free(i'm broke)

Can I put 350 in an 86 bayliner ciera 21.5 ft
Does the transom have to be modified
What outdrive do I need
New vs used
availability
how fast can I expect to go
what mileage to expect

I REALLY need to know this stuff because what should have been my best summer ever has left me saddened and mistrustful of anything with the word "marine" associated with it.

PS. pass the hat for me. that boat literally broke me. thank god I don't have a mortgage or kids.

I'm sorry to hear about that mess. You can repower anything, but at what cost? A 140HP should be able to push a 22foot boat, even if it IS a Bliner. I would think you have prop issues. A spun hub, improper pitch. You need more pitch, and larger diameter (if it can go larger)...
A set of trim tabs would help emmensely too.
These however, will cost around $500 new, but go on a "walkabout" of the local boatyards, and try to locate a set of used ones.
The prop wont be cheap iether, but still cheaper than repowering..And what would you have after repowering? Another unknown to worry about. They pulled this engine for a reason,me thinks.
And with your track record, I doubt I would be able to trust the seller.

Also, check the hull for plugged bulkhead drains. If the bow has trapped water, which is not uncommon from a boat that has been sitting unused for a long time. The extra wieght may account for the low top end. But the fact that you can red line tells me you can definately use more prop.
The outdrive grenading on you is not uncommon to new boaters with used boats. The outdrive on I/Os, or the lower unit on outboards is often neglected until they go no more. It's not a reflection on the seller, but he should've checked that.
If caught in time, as in a routine 40hour drain and inspection, all damage could've been avoided. Not that you wouldn't have had to have it repaired (new seals and such), but the repairs would've been much cheaper.
The reason this forum exists is, there are many boaters who are not wealthy. Instead of "having" the boat repaired, they iether repair it themselves, because it's the only way...Or they are force to park it on the side of the house. They need know-how. And a set of tools to go fishing.
I myself do feel your pain. I know boats fairly well, and STILL spend way more than I can afford keeping them ship shape. But to me, it is a labor of love. I don't go anywhere, unless it's to the Saturday night stock car races, and lately, I haven't been able to go because of our buget. It does kinda bite....But then again, the boat is ready...JUST MY LUCK!! A HURICANE!!! I guess the boats will sit in the yard. Jeees!!
I spent my Saturday pulling the lower unit off a friend's Merc. But he is here, because like you and me, he aint got the green to have it done.
Welcome to the forum,Dmiller. And stick around. These guys will walk you thru a powerhead rebuild, and be glad to do it...And with the jack you save, you can plan another outing or two.
But I think I can speak for the majority here, when I say I feel your pain.

Yes, i feel the pain. Dont be discouraged enough to quit boating, next year will be better. One great weekend out will make you feel a lot better. I run a boat repair shop, and i can't begin to tell you the times i've repaired boats that were just purchased. Hang in there! Advise, dont repower, it's usually more effort than it's worth. Agreeing with 12F, if your out of rpm's, you need to look at props, but be carefull. Find a place that will lend props till you find the right pitch. Dont purchase till you know its right.

12F, batten down the hatches, it looks like a bumpy ride coming in the next few days...

Yea, it's getting kinda old. Two wind blown weekends in a row. And the work days have been pretty nice...Figures.

in my opinion u paid too much$$$ for the boat. 12,000 for an 86 bay? the boat is underpowered. a 4cyl.140 h.p on a 21 footer just don't cut it when u take on fuel, acc. friends etc. u can repower but will cost big $$$. i don't think that drive can handle the torque from a 350. before u jump in ask another mech. his opinion.

Dmiller...a hearty pat on the back for hanging in there....that is a season from hell......the boat is repaired, operational now, correct? now that you have a little boating experience under your belt, maybe you would like to change something else about this boat? maybe you should sell in the spring and shop for something more suitable for your needs? even the same boat with a larger engine? I know this may taste bad initially, but the cost of repower will make you blush, even after last season...
