86' Evinrude 15hp 2-stroke has a forward, nuetral, reverse>>Everyone goes reverse?

Hey guys today I was out ont the delaware, I have a 15hp Evinrude 86', pullstart/short shaft. The river was shallow todya so i don't lock down the prop in case i hit some boulder. The prop came close to the surface on a couple of a counts and two time I had to pop it up before I was able to fully have it cut off. Although I didn't hit any rocks, not today any way. That being said. after i popped the prop up the secound time and drifted, from then on it didn't matter wehter u had it in forward, neutral or reverse it was all going in reverse. Oh yeah after about a half an hour of figureing out what i could do I notice some fuel comeing from under the choke and carb intake. This lead me to believe that it had something to do with the air and fuel intake. Note I changed the gas in the tank and flushed the fuel like whats my next step? Becase after i changed the gas and what not it was still all backwards. Thanks for the help.

Sounds like at best your shift rod has become disconnected. At worst your going to have to open up the gear case. Won't have anything to do with fuel. Best of luck. Rick.

I agree. your shift rod has become disconnected at the brass connector. Remove the six bolts that hold your lower unit on. If your shift rod is still connected, you will not be able to pull the lower unit down more than an inch. If it is disconnected, you will be able to pull the lower unit completely off. With the motor mounted to your boat, the shift rod is located closet to the boat. The upper part and the lower part of the shift rod is connected by a brass connector with two bolts in it to hold them together. If you do this yourself, make sure when you go go put the lower unit back on, you line the water tube up with the water pump correct. Feel free to ask questions and google some of the parts i have mentioned to see what your looking for. Also if you look up how to install a water pump on youtube, they will show you the shift rod and how to line up water tube with water pump. Its worth trying it yourself because if you cant figure it out and you take it to the shop, you will already have lower unit off for them.
