Hi, On my 86 Evinrude 50 HP when I dropped the lower unit there wasn't any rubber bushing that goes on the end of the water tube into the water pump. The new kit came with a rubber bushing. Is it possible that this was left out at the factory? I have ran the engine for 20 years with no overheating issues.

Some kits have extension tubes for long and extralong shaft lenths. If you have a short shaft and a long shaft is available, most likely the "bushing" is an extension tube. Then again, if its a short rubber bushing, it may be an updated version. If it's not a factory pump kit, sometimes a lot of extra stuff can be in the box to cover several models. Post a pic or give a good description of the part and someone will chime in.
PS It has not been twenty years since you last changed the pump, has it? If so, the rubber bushing may have rotted away!!!!You can check the BRP website for a lower unit parts breakdown to see if it is called out.
Good Luck

If the bushing fits, without binding, use it.

One thing may help, and that is to look at the parts diagram to see what was supposed to be there:

BRP Parts Catalog

Once you find your motor, enlarge the "Gercase" diagram. It will show the water pump and parts.

Re: 86 Evinrude 50 HP water tube bushing

I looked at the BRP site and it looks like it is part #59 water tube grommet and that it goes under part #53 the water tube bracket. It looks like I was mistaken, I thouht the water tube grommet went into the top of the water tube bracket not between the bracket and the water pump. Thank You for the info on the brp site it was extremely helpfull!
