The idle adjustment knob doesn't do anything to change the idle speed when I turn it. I would like to pull the twist grip off and see what is going on but I don't have the Special Tool No 390767 called for in my OMC repair manual. It is used to depress the retaining pins that hold the twist grip in place. Is there a "Home in the garage" way to remove it?

As you adjust this knob you should see the throttle linkage move (take the cover off) does it?

No, their in lies the problem (-: It is sticky and hard to turn also but doesn't change the location the spark cam stops at low throttle. I have adjusted all the linkages per the OMC repair manual.

And yet, the throttle actually works . . . hrm . . .

I wonder if you've got a set of stripped threads in the adjuster.

I've never had a need to take one of those apart. Sounds like you do though. I can't recall if the manual gives any insights on tearing that apart.

Unfortunately the repair manual is not much help. It says to use special tool number XXXXXX and pull it off. I have a idea I am going to try but I was hoping for some real experience.
