86 force 125 carb issue

Hello all,

I finally got the CDI module I've been waiting for. Now I notice that if I cover the top carb with my hand the engine stalls which I would think was normal if you sufficate the carb. But my problem is that it doesn't do that when I cover the bottom carb. I have good suction on both carbs and the compression tests came back OK. 100 psi across all cylinders. I swapped the reed valves between the upper and lower carbs and that made no difference. My only othr option is to swap the carbs unless somebody can tell me something I'm missing. And I do have spark on all cylinders.

Did you try tapping on the carb with a small "something" with it running? Maybe the float or needle is stuck in the carb, just my 2 sense.

Never tried hand choking myself, but that tube on the port side between the two manifolds is a balance tube to equalize vacuum between the two manifolds when the carbs are slightly unbalanced. Don't know why it would work only in one direction though.

Well I'm not sure what's going on. Does anybody have any tips on setting the timing? Seems as though I have a miss in the idle. Thinking maybe the timing is off. I can't get it to idle at low rpms. I don't notice the miss at high rpms. I think both me and my neighbor are thoroughly confused. I have a manual but it does give really good instructions on setting the timing. I would like to take it out tomorrow but if I can't get it to stay running then I'll have to bag it.

Disconnect and ground all your plug wires (must ground them to the block or you can ruin electrical components),

Disconnect the neutral switch, I just wrap a piece of wire or tape around it to depress the switch (microswitch under the throttle tower),

Connect timing light to #1 cylinder,

Advance throttle control to WOT,

Have someone turn the key so the starter spins the motor and check the timing while it is spinning.

Stop, Adjust, Recheck

Set to 2 degrees less and it should be right on when it is actually running.

Ok well I took it out this morning while the ramp was not busy. It ran worse than before. I brought it home and started messing around. I went to swap the cd modules and realized that the 2 wires coming off the module to the coils were swapped. The orange should go to the #3 and the red goes to the #4. I swapped those and the thing is purring like a kitten. My naighbor is coming over later with his timing light so we can get that dialed in since we messed with it a little yesterday. Now I have to decide wheather or not to take it back the 35 miles to the lake. Thanks for everyones help.

remember to keep it in the water while timing (lake or a tub) Keep that impeller wet

Ok the motor is purring. Got the timing set and all the wires where their supposed to be. She starts up right away and idles perfect. What a big relief. I thought I was going to have to take it in and pay out the but for someone to lookk it over for me. Thanks to everyone on this site.

My turn with a problem.
Haven't used my motor in a few years. Replaced lower unit. Repaired Trim tab seals and started it up (pretty easily) the other day ... but gas is flowing badly out of the hole on the side the bottom carb. Is there a float needle stuck or something?

Appreciate advice.

Yep, needle is not closing. Take the carb apart and clean it out. Should take care of the problem.

I am working on a force 85, we have one bad needle out of three. I have been told the seat cannot be changed, any Idea where I can get new needles..
