Not my boat, my parents' in Yuma, so I cannot figure it out in person.

They just bought the boat with no instruction manual.

How do they free up the throttle lever so they can give it gas without it going into gear? So they can pump it before starting it.

See that little black tab attached to the lever above the key switch, pull up on it. Be careful until you get used to it, it will rev up the engine pretty far.

I have that same control on my boat. 1 1/2 up from closed will be good enough to start cold engine. Just be careful not to over rev it! Also to choke it, push the key in while starting! You will hear click.

Good point! I am surprised that the previous owner didn't give the manual with the boat. I always try to provide a manual with anything I sell.

I bought a seadoo jet boat from a guy, only later to find out that a mutual friend had given him the shop manual, but the seller didn't give it to me with the boat.

I knew I was screwed at that point. The boat was a lemon.

I sold that boat with two versions of the manual, on paper and pdf.

And you don't "pump" the throttle like on an old car. Just lift that lever. The motor does have a primer system for the "choke", so push the key in to prime it. The only pumping to be done is to squeeze the fuel bulb in the fuel line until it hardens.

As far as I know, holding the key in does nothing, there is a primer that squirts fuel into the motor. Pushing the key in (in the "on" position) squirts one time, release the key and push again, and it squirts again, thats the clicking sound you here. There is no choke plates in the carbs. I hear alot of people saying they hold the key in, while cranking the starter. Just turn the key to "on" push in, release, turn to start. You may have to "bump" the key in a few times to squirt more fuel.

Actually, those primers DO need the key to be held in to operate properly. The primer is a valve, not a pump. When you push the key in it opens the valve, allowing fuel to run through the primer into the manifold. The fuel is pressurized by the fuel pump - which only operates when the motor is spinning over.

I never thought of it working like that. It seems when I start my 1987 90HP Johnson, if it doesnt start after pushing the key in once, I bump the key about 3 times then, and not holding it in, and it will start. Mind you this is a cold start.

It is possible that your primer valve has been "pre pressurized", either by priming the fuel line bulb or if you have an OMC steel tank that may pressurize a bit on warm days. Other than that, the valve needs the fuel pump to be working to feed fuel into the manifold...
