This engine is closed cooled and sat for 5 years in Ohio without winterization. Is it pretty much a guarantee that the block is cracked. I ask because I have read elsewhere that only the heat exchanger cracks in closed cooled engines. Thanks for the help.

The engine it self should be full of anti freeze so it should be alright, remove the cooling system cap if its full you should be aright. The rest of the system would be, rectifer, heat exchanger, oil cooler and exhaust elbow any of the parts could be damaged but the heat excanger is the most likely---Bob

"should be full of anti freeze".. is the operative phrase here.. there is no guarrantee that it was thow..

not wishing to be pessimistic here.. just pointing out the obvious..

trog100

The resevoir on the top of the motor was empty which worried me until I started to diconnect the hose that runs to the heat exchanger and antifreeze came out. Can anyone tell me what else I should look at before I try to start it?

i might have problems with the carb and have to clean it out.. i would remove the plugs and squirt some thin-ish oil into the bores let it stand for while then try and turn it over by hand and on the starter a bit.. put some fresh oil in the engine.. change the filter kinda stuff..

there are many things u can/should check before actually saying its ready to use.. but if all u want to do is see if it runs.. just do the oil in the cylinders and spin it over a while with the plugs out bit first..

trog100

Have you tryed to crank it yet? Might want to pull the plugs and squirt a little oil in the cylinders in case they rusted a little while sitting.
Check the gas for water and crud. Best to catch it before it gets all through the carb or injectors.

After sitting so long, I would pull the distributor and rent an oil pump priming tool and prime the oil pump system real good before attempting a start.
