Give it some time, it's about 25 MB in size. It's an Adobe Acrobat file.

I edited out your email address, you don't want to post it on forums or the spam bots get's em.
If you want to give your email address so someone, just PM them (Private Messsage) but, I'm not going to email you the file. Just click the previous link, it works for everyone else. Just give it time to open like I said. It's a about 25 MB in size.

Try right clicking on the link and "save as" - that will save the file on your hard drive for the next time you need it.

Re: '86 Mercruiser 200 Thunderbolt ignition

Don S, ALCON,

Alright, I'm still working on troubleshooting steps.
1-Haven't pulled the dist yet to check the pin for the "jumping"
2- Getting ready to do compression test before furthering the ignition effort.

BUT-- I have been reading up in the Selco manual on ignition systems to get smart, and have studied in-depth the wiring diagrams for the Merc 200 thunderbolt system, and the 3.0 Delco EST you provided me.
**I noticed something that may or may not be a culprit for the lack of advance.
On the Merc 200 diagram, notice that the back side of the interrupter switch goes to BK1, ground. On the back side of the EST int sw, circuit goes Purple to Primary power/coil circuit
If the stock interrupter sw was designed to go to ground when the contact closes...........??

Does this have anything to do with the price of tea in China?

Thanks

Re: '86 Mercruiser 200 Thunderbolt ignition

Don, Anyone,

I set the distributor in on the tooth with the rotor button facing the #1 piston and the crank set on 10 deg BTDC.
Set the distributor cap, and plugged in the plug wires.
Used the kit jumper for BTM, and fine tuned to 10 Deg.
Plugged the 4 pin connector back in and fired her off.
I was 1 point off on the distributor cap, got it turned back and she fired right up and ran clean from idle to full throttle with no backfiring or anything

The mystery is I'm still showing no advance with the light, after I moved the cap back, the timing slid to about 8 Deg BTDC, which, coincidentally is what is on the data plate.
With the light set at 0 deg, it advances maybe up to 12 or so at full throttle????? How can it be running right with no advance? Or is it timing light operator error????

The advance curve data you gave me for the V8 is not in the ballpark of what I'm seeing happening.

I'm really confused--but it's running:confused::redface:

Re: '86 Mercruiser 200 Thunderbolt ignition

Well, guess that ends that. No more help. Thanks anyways, I figured the rest out with alot of reading.

I and went through the whole ignition circuit and then took the distributor down, , the pickup coil was good so the only thing left is the module. It has to have a short causing it to be stuck in BTM. Took me about 7 hours over a few days and a bunch of tylenol to finally figure it out. Great experience. I'll just have to prove it when the new module gets here.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

Sorry there baw3510maverick, it over-ran my direct experience and all I had left was to throw parts at it like the sensor or module but did not want to have to go there at your expense. I certainly hope that is it, be sure to post back with results.

Re: '86 Mercruiser 200 Thunderbolt ignition

For all interested:

A few things:

1- Michigan Motorz manufactures this conversion kit to the EST.
I actually got in touch with the guy who did the original work on the ignition, and got the original instructions that came with the Kit.

**to set timing in BTM, there is an adapter that plugs into the module with a black wire and the jumper to jump the terminals on the two white wires.
The black wire must be layed down on B+.... therein lied one problem, but still didn't explain the initial problem because that was done at the time of the conversion.

2--the module was bad, probably a lemon or it was shorted on install, since I had issues immediately after the repair last year. Michigan Motorz hooked me up with another module even though it was 3 weeks out of warranty and overnighted it to me so I could get her in the water last weekend.
She ran great.

Thanks again for all the help.
