86 omc seadrive wont shutdown

Start the boat like usual and runs fine. but when i go to shut it down, instead of stopping it loses 100-200 rpms from the idle but continues to run. I changed the key switch with no luck. my book says to try turning off the battery to see if that stops it but also does not(crappy book dont say much else). Any ideas??

I have heard of a motor being so carboned up the carbon glows red hot and then the motor continues to run even though the ignition has been turned off. Seems very possible. When was the last time you did a decarb. on it? one way to know for certain would be to pull the plug wires after the ignition has been shut off. Are you stopping it by choking it or what? Rick.

yes, by choking it out it will shutdown. I tried pulling a plug wire and it stopped it. doubt it matters but its a 115 omc seadrive, forgot that in the first post.

i went off the pulling a plug wire test and pulled them all 1 at a time. only 2 of the wires when removed shut it down, when pulling the other 2 made no change in the idle, the 2 that killed it are on the same side so i guess only 1 side of the motor is the problem?

Good luck with it. I am bowing out as I really haven't any idea what the fix is. I'm sure some of the more knowledgable fellows will help you out. Rick.

does it have one or 2 power packs? if 2 one is not shutting down possible kill wire to the pack.
