Hello to everyone here on iboats. First i would like to thank everyone in advance for help and tips.

So here is a little back ground to fill in what i didn't get pictures of, First got my first boat at a good price and it needed a little reupholstering and some minor wood replacement(cough cough). It had all the interior in it, and we went out about 5 or 6 times on the last part of the season and had a blast. The plan was to do the interior during the winter. Well as you can see the more i cut the more i need to replace. So it looks like im going to be doing the transom and stringers here soon.

Some questions i have are. 1-whats the best way to support the boat? i just replaces the bunks on the trailer but it does sag over the bunk supports and i am thinking thats going to be an issue when i start doing the stringers, floor and foam. 2- i have a crack in the bow that i need to fix, i understand how to do the gel coat and fiberglass on a flat surface, but not sure about on the very front.
here are all the pic's i have so far.

Re: 86 searay seville Floor down replacement

Congratulations on the new boat. Like you, I bought a Seville at a good price that only "needed a little work". Right.....

The best place to look for your answer is under the How To's & Other Great Info which is on the restoration main page. Scroll down to the last link and follow FRISCOBOATER as he rebuilds his boat from the ground up. This will answer a lot of you questions plus give you ideas and other questions that you'll want answered. I didn't know (and still don't) anything about boats but after watching his videos and having a few others jump in and answer my questions I feel way more comfortable to attack the project that maybe ahead of me.

There is also a Sea Ray Seville group so post you questions in there. A few guys have parts boats and are happy to help out when needed. Again, good luck and welcome!

Holy smokes, bringing this one back from grim death. If it was me I might just keep the motor and drive if they are good, and cut up that hull. I would think you could find a bare hull for next to nothing that would be in better shape. Not to sound negative but what you have needs more work and money than it will ever be worth by a long shot. Would be cheaper to find a decent hull and start with that. Front keel needs tons of work and inside is shot.

What happend to the Bow??? It appears to have hit something....hard. You prolly have more structural damage than you are aware of. looking up at the rub rails there is flex damage there as well. You really need to inspect this area inside and out very thoroughly. It does not look good.

I figured the front damage is from the docks at the lake out here and power loading on the trailer, it matches the bump pad on the trailer if it was raised a little higher. (Old owners were drunk drivers).. damage isnt as bad looking on the inside of the bow, and hell, im already this far in, why stop now. :D

Why stop now??? Because if you're not an experiend glasser that repair is gunna be a big challenge for you and then there's the gelcoating and or Painting. Did you notice that the Hull is deformed on the bow on the Starboard side at the rub rail?

I like your attitude !

Hi welcome to iboats.

Many a boater has found them selves in exactly the same predicament as you......no worries. its a glass boat, and it can be fixed.

Yes....you can do it.

First off, lets deal with the bunks and the sagging.

I really don't like the fact it is still sagging even though all the wet foam is out....that means thin hull.
you could pull the motor..it only takes a few minits, This will also allow you to replace the stringers and motor mounts.

If he transom is shot, the motor needs to come out any how...
This will take the weight off the hull and it will stop sagging.

The other way to fix it is to place 2x6s on the hull, exactly like the bunks...but one step higher up the hull.
you will need to support the 2x6s from the trailer....it will take some work and measuring, but you must get the hull properly supported before you do any stringer work.

You could also pull the boat off the trailer and make some proper cradles to support the boat. for pics of the cradles....click the link in my sig.

As far as glassing the nose.....no worries.....that is an easy fix.

You will have to get access to the inside of the nose to do it, as this is an inside out repair.

Read this first..........

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=235651

Using a 4 inch angle grinder with a rubber backing pad, and a 24 grit sanding disc, grind away the very top coat of resin. There might be a flow coat over the glass,,,,,just grind it off. there also might be a block of wood behind the tow hook...this will need to be removed as well.

After you have the inside surface ground down to bare glass.....clean it with the vacuum and then wash with acetone.

Using unwaxed poly resin apply a layer of 1.5 csm to the area. Use the resin roller to get all the air out of the lamination. Then use a layer of 1708 bi axe fiberglass cloth....make it the same size as the csm.
Then add another layer of the csm one inch larger then the 1708....and another layer of 1708 the same size as the larger csm. do this one more time....making another sandwich of larger csm and 1708. let cure.

Lay this all on wet....(do it all at the same time) make sure you roll out any air.

On the out side....grind off the gellcoat....and any un even areas. you will need to grind away the gellcoat from a larger area that the repair it self.

If you have any un even areas caused by the old glass,,,just grind them off...

Vacuum and clean with acetone...then lay 3 layers of 1.5 csm over the area...each layer slightly larger than the last.
roll out the air and let cure.

After its cured....take 80 grit sand paper and smooth out the repair area.

Now....its a standard gellcoat repair.

After the gellcoat is repaired.....you will need to replace the block of wood backing the bow eye tow hook.....glass that in as well....a few layers of 1.5 csm will be fine.

Determine where you want the bow eye hook and place tape over the new gellcoat. With the drill in reverse...drill thru the gellcoat. Now place the drill in forward, and drill thru the glass and wooden block. Then just replace the towing hook.

The link in my sig, has all the information you will need, I would suggest to read the first 16 pages...
That contains all the glassing info you will need, for the transom and stringers.
Then use the index for the gellcoat repair.

cheers

Re: 86 searay seville Floor down replacement

Welcome to the drydock...

On the surface it looks like a nice boat, so did mine, sort of:facepalm:...

First off, don't be put off by any of what seems like negative comments that we may heap upon you throughout your current adventure...

It is just that we are becoming old and salty and see this kind of situation almost everyday...

That being said, since this is a fiberglass boat, anything structural and cosmetic can be fixed to better than new condition...

The one HUGE item you need to be sure of is that the engine and drive are in great condition. Apparently they are, because you mentioned that when you got the boat, you went out a few times...That being the case, just make certain that you do all of the proper maintenance on it so that it continues to live a long and happy life...

The main thing that will be stressed upon you is that the total, safe and complete restoration of this hull is going to cost money, time, sweat, blood, aggravation, sweat, blood and did I mention Money and time, plus, plus...

So, as long as you are prepared for this and are willing to stick it out and dive in, we will continue to help, cheer, support, harass, bother, and generally be here for you.

There is nothing that even comes close to rocket science in performing this mission, but you should definitely pay close attention to the advice that the more knowledgeable guys on here give you...

Sometimes, the hardest decision to make is to walk away from a project and look for an alternative, but most of us here tend to scoff at the thought of that and end up knee deep in fiberglass dust anyway, so if you are commited, as most of us here should be, then I say, Go For It!

We'll be here...
Good Luck,
GT1M

Re: 86 searay seville Floor down replacement

Thanks for the info and the links, my plan for tomorrow is to get the outdrive off and the motor out provided i can get my buddy over with his service truck with a crane on it.(He's in the middle of a jet boat build) Ill also figure out how to add in support bunks on the trailer. The negative feed back wont deter me on this little venture, as my other boat owner buddy's that suckered me into boating told me before hand "You gotta be stupid to buy a boat BUT you'll love every minute of it" If anything this will be a good learning experience. I'm not doing this to try and turn a profit. And the pics of the bow make it look awful, its only about a 6" square, those nics are about the size of a dime. This will be fun and ill get to change up the inside a little. I'm up for the challenge.

cool....

just make sure you have the correct safety equipment.

once you get the motor out....have a look if the sagging on the bottom goes away.

in fact,,,it wouldnt hurt to modify the trailer for an extra set of bunks !

quick...easy...and cheap.

Re: 86 searay seville Floor down replacement

Got set back a little with work, weather and sickness. But i got the motor,out-drive,gimbal housing<---- At least that's what I'm going to be calling it, and the fuel tank removed and started cutting out the center transom wood and if all works out tomorrow i should be able to get the stringers cut out. I'm hoping to be able to use them for a pattern when i make the new ones. I did manage to get half of the wood separated off the transom, It might make for a usable template to a pattern.

Welcome to i boats. Your boat appears to be the same as mine. I am no expert, but have done a lot of work on that particular boat (see link in my signature)

Good luck!

OK, it been a little bit since my last post, So now it question time. I figured on doing friscoboater's method of attaching the new transom to the back with penutbutter, but as far as getting the stringers cut right i was wondering if the outer strake would be the best place to use as far as getting the height right.
Oh, and here are a couple of pics of my progress.

If your original deck sat on the strake... I know mine did... range across with a straight piece of board and measure down to the hull. That should give you a good idea of the stringer height ;)

Did you brace up the outer chines to keep the hull from flexing ?

Did a little bracing, after i got the engine out and the tons of wet foam it sat normal, i did a little bracing mostly for me moving around on the inside.
