I've got a 86 VRO 50 that as soon as I push in the key to choke it it blows the fuse and then you can't turn over the engine. It starts fine when you use the manual side of the primer. I also had the engine blow up because the oiler isn't working. I just rebuilt it and I might possibly have crossed a wire on the primer. I'm premixing now but can you give me some help with the oiler too?
Thanks
Mike

Indeed a crossed wire Mike. The purple/white stripe wire is the lead to the primer. Check to see if you by chance have it grounded someplace. When you push the key in, the ignition switch just applies 12Volts to the primer solenoid.

If the VRO pump has no wire harness or has a three wire harness attached, replace it. Or, keep premixing.

Tell us about the damage to the motor before rebuild. How many cylinders were damaged?

Thanks for responding OBJ,
Only one cyl was damaged but since we had it apart we resleeved both cyl's and replaced the pistons. The rebuild went pretty smooth but we had someone else take it apart and give us a quote on it. When we got to the wiring we were a little lost since we didn't take it off. We have a wiring schematic and the engine runs good but hard to start without the choke. Thanks again.
Mike

What OBJ is leading up to, and I will say it too, you did not have a VRO (oiler) failure if only 1 cylinder was damaged. If the VRO quit sending oil to the carbs, both cylinders would be scored, both pistons, rod, and the crankshaft would be ruined and every bearing would be a blue or a straw colored. Chances are the one cylinder was damaged by lean running, detonation, or a hot spot.

If you disconnect the purple/white wire at the primer solenoid, does the fuse still blow when you push the key in? If not, you have a shorted primer. If the fuse still blows, you have to trace the wire to find out where it is shorted to ground. Make sure it is not contacting another terminal behind the key switch.

Re: 86 VRO 50 Electric Primer Fuse

Thanks for the info seahorse, the lower cyl detonated and we also replaced the crank, rods and bearings while it was apart. I marked the oil tank and have run 18 gals since with very little if any movement. I asumed the the reason for the detonation was a bad oiler.

I'll try to disconect the purple/white wire and see what happens. Thanks again for all the help with this I really appreciate it.
Mike

Yep....what seahorse said... :)

Now...if you've run 18 gal. of fuel through the engine and the oil reservoir has not dropped, there is a problem with the pump. You should recheck to make sure the pump is primed. You should do this by disconnecting the oil line from the pan and pumping the oil primer bulb until all air is removed from the oil line to the motor. Reconnect to pan. Squeeze oil primer bulb and watch the little oil flow tube to make sure it fills when the bulb is squeezed.

Also check the VRO motor connection to the block. Make sure the pulse limiters blue end is pointing toward the motor. Did you check the limiter is not plugged with carbon or anything that would hinder the operation of the limiter?

Make sure you don't have any kinked oil lines to the pump.

If all this is good, chances are the pump has gone south. Then you would have the option of continued premixing or to put a new pump on.

Also check the pick up tube in the oil tank. They sometimes get clogged with 18 year old oil. ;)
