Am I missing something, like there should be a seperate tank for oil?

The motor makes a rattle sound when in gear at ~3000rpm, sounds like valves missing oil. ( If this were a car engine).
One Mechanic said the oil pump is bad. Its a 2-stroke!, what oil pump?

Ideas?

Your engine came from the factory with a Autoblend unit on it, someone has removed it as they were not dependable. The engine is a 2 cycle and requires oil be mixed in the fuel, so if you have not been mixing the oil you probably have damaged the engine.

I have been mixing oil, but I bought this from someone. The guy I bought it from had the oil cans for mixing, also I assume he had been mixing it also.
If it had an autoblend unit, where would the tank have gone? there is no opening in the cover to add oil?

The pump and tank were in the back of the boat near the fuel tank were they pre mixed the oil and gas and then it when to the engine by way of the fuel line.

Is this a 6 cylinder or 4 cylinder engine? I ask for a couple of reasons.... That's about the era Merc dropped the I6s and introduced the 4s.... and the oil system for each of them is completely different.

The I6s never had oil-injection....ever... The Auto-blend someone referred to was a remote mixing system, not done in the engine.... and as they have already said, unreliable.... Auto-blend relied on an external oil tank and mixed the oil with the fuel as it was drawn through the fuel line and before it reached the engine....

The 4's come standard with oil-injection... a tank is inside the engine cowl, on the starboard side of the block, and uses an engine driven oil pump to add oil to the fuel at the fuel pump. These systems are very reliable.

Chris.............
Post your engine serial number and we can have a closer look at what you have.

Anyone who has repaired Mercury engine should know that a 87 Mercury 115 was a inline 6, the 4 cyl 115HP engines did not come along till 88 and they were not oil injected either the were a pre mixer that was done with a engine mounted pump and valve in the same fashion as the remote mounted AutoBlend. So really neither engine was oil injected, real oil injection systems the oil is injected into the engine not pre mixed like most outboards.

1987 was the year they changed, both engines were available in that year, so it could be either....

Yes, we know you're very knowledgeable on these engines and saying that it's not a true oil injection system is just semantics.... Help the man!!!

The 4 cyl was a 100HP in 87 and increased to 115 in 88 by Mercury so there would not be duplication in HP. at lest here in the states.

Its an Inline 6. Ithe S/N is B182483 I Looked it up, and its in the '87 model year range.

As I said, the words 'oil injected' is printed on the engine. and I have been pre-mixing, also, I have had the cowling off, and did not see a tank inside, or indication of a device being removed. The fuel pump had evidence of being replaced once.

Just wondered.

The 'oil injection' of the 6s was the remote Auto-blend system.... It was not inside the engine covers, it was with the fuel tank... Sounds like someone has removed it... a sensible thing... Just stick to mixing the oil and fuel yourself...
