Can I add insulation to inside of engine cowl?
My 87 115 merc has no insulation on the cowl. I remember having a 115 merc when I was a kid, and it had insulation on the inside ? it was in a ?plastic bag? glued to the metal. And it was loud. Can I get some, and would it reduce the noise any?

Guess I should have searched the forum first, found the answer. Makes no diff, and insulation was dropped in the 80's.

Perhaps I will make a platform over the engine with insulation to reduce noise.

This might be sort of extreem, but here is how I dealt with a noisy engine years ago.

In the 80's I had a Force 50 hp which was the loudest engine of any type that I have ever heard. My ears would ring after 20 minutes of crusing with that thing.

I bought a cloth engine cover designed for a significantly larger engine and I glued 3 inches of high density foam to the inside of the cover, with some holes near the air intake on the engine cowling. Then I put the cover over the outside of the engine and pulled the drawstring tight.

It looked silly, but worked great. Really cut the engine noise dramatically. Of course that engine did not have oil injection, so there was no need to take the cover off, except for routine maintenance.

I eventually re-powered and got rid of the Force. Never missed it, it was a lousy excuse for an engine...

I used some of that 1/4" or 1/2" thick reflective duct or noise insulation and it works great. You can cut it to whatever length or width you need and then use some 3M spray adhesive to attach it to the cover.

I also have an 87' 115 hp Tower of Power that was missing the insulation. My solution was to go to the junkyard and pull some sound deadner out of the truck of an old Cadillac. I cut it to fit the inside of the cowl and glued it in with spray cement. I worked pretty well and decreased the sound significantly......just an idea

I think I would rather have my electronics stay cool than have a quieter motor.
