If you dont want to remove the starter. Get some engine cleaner from the auto parts store or Wal Mart and spray it. Then wash down with water. Then re-lube with grease or spray with WD40 or some lube like that. You need to lube this thing several times per year.

your starter bendix has a rubber bushing in it and according to omc/bomb you are not supposed to spray it with products such as wd-40 because they will make the rubber to slippery and cause the rubber bushing to slip .when the bushing slips the motor will not turn over .if the bendix is sticking you should lube the armature shaft with starter lube your local dealer should have some if you want to clean the shaft then you need to do so with a rag .if you need to remove the bendix and clean the shaft and the inside of the bendix, then apply lube on the shaft and reinstall .

forgot something . you do not want to use the harsh cleaners as previously mentioned either.they can deteriate the rubber bushing and also cause it to slip just as the wd-40 can.

Thank You Capt. Do I pull the starter gear up even with the flywheel or just go ahead and take it apart right away? I have been told that this is due to the grease not letting it function properly, and this seems to be the case here, as when I take the cover off and tap the starter motor it will work just fine. THIS IS REALLY APPRECIATED.

that is something you will have to figure out when you look at it i have no way to know how much dirt or old grease you may have built up on it ,but if i had any doubt i would go ahead and pull the gear off and clean it all up and then lube it ,that way you should be certain to correct the problem and be done with it.

Re: 87 25hp evinrude bendix problem

trent,i know quite a few people who have done what you had said .and no the problem does not usually occur the day they sprayed it and at times it may take doing so several times before the problem shows up .but eventually the bushing slips,i guess how long it takes before it slips will depend on how much spray is put on the gear and bushing when it is done .yes what you mentioned will most likely work but will cause premature failure of the bushing.
