87 50 Horse Merc

I have a 1987 50 horse merc on my 15 foot closed bow Fabuglass. Went to take it out last weekend filled it up with gas started it at the house before i took it out. me and the fishing pals got it into the water it started fine then about 100 yards outside the no wake zone it died and did not want to restart. after a while it finally started up but only wanted to do about 5 miles per hour at WOT.<br />After it dies a couple more times I thought I might have over filled the tank so we pumped some gas into another container and i turned the gas tank around the other way so that vent would not be covered by gas while underway and everything worked fine. Is it possable that an overfilled gas tank could cause what I am describing.

Well Yeah thats what I did but now is not wanting to stay running so I am going to change the plugs and see what happens I kind of think the carb might need to be rebuilt or at least decarb the motor. I will keep you posted

sounds like carbs need cleaning could be the conectionson the fuel line. <br /> change plugs and run if it dont run fast try a pump spray bottle filled with a gass oil mix . into the carbs see if it picks up speed then you will know . when youpull the plughs one will be dry if the carb isnot putting fuel to that cylinder . papasage
