The tilt motor on my 87 70 hp is going bad It is very slow to lift the motor and today it wouldn't go at all. The battery is new and fullly charged, the motor cranks over easily and starts right up. But it's painfull to wtch the motor go up and down. The starter, tilt and trim solenoids were just replaced with merc units so I know those are good.
Who big of a deal is it to replace the motor? What's the best way to test it?

Thanks

It's one of the jobs that you need to at lest read a factory manual before undertaking

Re: 87 70hp Tilt Motor

I got the Chilton given to me for free. Would you try and get the factory one too?
In your experience, what goes bad on these? The solenoid was replaced (I did all three when 1 went bad last summer).
I was thinking of just taking it apart and cleaning it up to see if I can get it to work again. Beats the heck out of a $400+ bill for the replacement part...

It sounds like a bad ground or the pump motor is bad, if the manual you have covers what your working on great but in most difficult jobs the aftermarket manual lack info

Re: 87 70hp Tilt Motor

Well I finally got some time to have a look at the tilt/trim motor today.
I lightly tapped it with a hammer while my helper worked the switch and I could hear the motor turning (it was totally dead before). So it would appear the brushes or something inside are bad.
I tried to remove the motor housing (it's refered to as design 2 in the Chilton manual) and I can only access 1 of the allen head mounting bolts. The motor housing is in between the transom brackets and the manual says to remove the motor from the transom to get at the bolt.
I was thinking of loosening (not removing) the 4 bracket bolts then tilting the motor and bracket away from the transom while supporting the weight of the motor and leg. It seems this should allow access to the mounting bolt.

Given your experience, do you have any comments or suggestions before I try it?

Thanks,

Easy way is to pick the motor off of the transom. You have to access the hidden bolt on the backside of the trim motor.
