I just bought a 87 tyee with a 90 horse merc on it and when i took it out realized that the steering is tough. I greesed it and it didnt help so i took off the initial nut that holds the line to the motor. I thought i could disconnect it then but realized that the line runs into the housing. How do i get the line off so i can spray penetrating oil down it and losen it up.

If it don't have a zert on the cable housing you cann't and will probably have to change the cable, it's a common problem--Bob

Re: 87' 90horse merc steering disassembly

I have taken the rod that is attached to the end of the cable most of the way out and realized that the cable attaches to the rod that you see slide out the other end. So i have a rod that is on the end of the cable that goes to my steering wheel attached to a rod that slides in and out of the housing attached to my motor with a zerk on it. they pivot like they should disconnect. How can i disconnect the two.

Brandon' the zert I was talking about is on the cable before the nut that anchors the cable to the engine the zert on the engine only greases the end of the cable where it goes thru the tilt tube and will not get lube into the cable where the problem usally is, sorry if I confused you ---Bob

Remove the steering link that connects the end of the steering cable to the engine. Loosen the nut that secures the steering cable to the engine tilt tube. Pull the steering cable out of the tilt tube. Now turn the steering wheel and see if you still have binding. If you do, the cable is the problem. If it is now free, try moving the engine manually. If its binding, the engine pivots needs attention. Clean out the tilt tube, get some lubricant inside it, reassemble everything and you should be good to go. It is very common for the crud in the tilt tube to cause steering bind.

Re: 87' 90horse merc steering disassembly

I have done what you said upinsmoke. I'm pretty sure that the culprit is the cable. It is probably the original on my 87 lund tyee because everything else is. I looked for a number or a name and found nothing so ill describe it. the black cable measures 11 foot and on the motor end is a rod that runs through the pivot housing and connects to the rod on the motor. On the other end is a little strange. Behind the steering wheel is a long flat metal rectangle housing with a long toothed gear inside. When you turn the wheel a round gear moves the flat gear attached to the end of the cable which in turn moves the cable to the motor. I need a new one any help would be great thanks guys.
