87 bayliner capri with v8 i/o wont start but pops???

So I have the 87 Capri with a v8 and a quadrajet carb. When I turn over the engine it pops real quickly and doesn?t stay running. (By the way this engine ran last week for about a hr. very smoothly) I can see that it has fuel getting to the carb when I throttle it, and it has spark also. If I gas it all the way it will start for about 3 secs running at high rpms but then stop. I know it is not a fuel problem because even if I put starting fluid in the carb it won?t stay running. Any help would be nice so I can use this gem.

If you have good spark, pull the plugs and crank the engine over and see if any water squirts out of any of the cylinders.

Ya say it's gettin' fuel, so, some diagnostics of the ignition is in order.....

Sounds like it could be some sort of a spark timing issue.

one thought -- Is it dry inside the distibutor cap?

the plugs look good little carbon but not bad, and not wet either

and no water came out of any cyl

Sounds like it could be some sort of a spark timing issue.

Do you have a bright blue spark coming out of the coil that will jump a 1/2" gap when cranking the engine?

yeah it has a strong spark out of the coil........sorry i had to go check..

Is it that same blue spark coming out of each spark plug wire? Bad cap, rotor would kill the spark.

If you do have good spark at the plug wires, try this.
Hook a jumper wire from the POS battery terminal to the + terminal on the coil and see if it starts. If it does, you need to remove the jumper to shut it off.

so i have good spark out of all 8 and i tried the + to coil andit didnt start aswell...... any other hints or thing i could look at.......thanks for your time again

Might think about pulling the carb and check to see if it is full of fuel or water, and how much crap is in the fuel bowl.

that was my first thought. so i had the carb rebuilt and drained all the fueland put new fuel in also changed both filters(the one on the carb and by the pump) and it had no build up in either one.

Have no clue about Olympia area. Where I'm at, there isn't anyone I would let touch my boat.

What has been done to the engine since the last time it ran normal.

Check for chafed or bare wires in or around the distributor. Is the alternator charging?
