guessing this is an older style aq/dp drive?

could be simple as a cable adjustment

possible other causes would be remote control issue, shift linkage at drive, shift foot binding in clutch/clutch issue...

check the shift linkage adjustment at the drive.

if you ran the drive light on oil, you may have cooked the transmission

Remove the cover on the rear of the drive and check if the cable is moving the linkage.
Bayliner used a generic control box to keep the cost down. They wear out.
If the cable is the problem they are easy to replace.
Try to post a picture of the linkage on the back of the drive.
