I'm planning on a repower of my 18 1/2 ft 87 bayliner. Right now I have a 87 125hp force and was looking for something between 1990 -2001 johnson/evenrude Can anyone make any suggestions or testimonials ?.I use the boat for fishing and taking the kids out so holeshot speed is not important Something durable with less smoke would be nice.

Re: 87 bayliner repower

Any Johnson Evinrude will be good as long as it is 70% or more of the max rated HP. Be sure to check the condition before purchasing though. Some 3 year old motors can be in worse condition than a 30 year old motor.
Good Luck.

you will have to change control boxes and cables to the Johnson/evinrude, should come with motor, but verify.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

Re: 87 bayliner repower

Hi, measure the new motor to get the correct shaft length. The force uses a different bolt pattern, the newer motors are wider apart and spaced further vertically. I installed a jackplate on my bayliner to correct a height issue, most plates are the newer pattern, so I had to fill in the existing holes and redrilled.

from the picture you can see the force mount is about 2in narrower. If your bayliner is like mine, getting to the lower bolts is tough thru the access hatch. I drill my plate for the force pattern such a way, I can unbolt and replace with newer style.

I'm currently rebuilding a 1985 140 motor, so I need to change out the controls and cables for the newer motor. good luck, let us know what you get for your boat

Re: 87 bayliner repower

I went with the Johnson for several reasons, To get more power I would have had to goto a force 150 and a new set of problems. The 1985 140 I got was a decent buy at $750, was complete and running and was a newer design "looper" as to the older "crossflow". The Johnson is a popular motor for parts and prices much better then my force was. I'm also very close to the ocean so motors are everywhere, even the force ones tho they don't seem to fair well at the ocean with out alot of upkeep.

The Jackplate corrected a lot of torque steer and increased my speed. My motor wasn't square on the transom when it was made, the cav plate was below the keel over 1 inch. Once I raised the motor up, the boat became fun again to use. And a nice side bonus is I can bolt any motor to it without disturbing the transom mounting.

When I mounted the plate I filled in all the transom holes (dowels and epoxy) relocated my drain scuppers and redrilled for the wider mounting pattern. I then drilled my plate for the force pattern in such a way as not to be close to the other mounting holes. You can see it in the picture, the top bracket holes (not used) is very close to an existing hole. So All I need to do is unbolt, remove motor and attach new.

My plate is a manual height adjust, I just set the height and forget about it, never readjusted, as it worked fine.

Good luck on your repowering, let us know what you get.

Re: 87 bayliner repower

thanks again for the info .Ive had my boat in the water about 7-8 times this year but was only able to run it about 3 times due to no start.(Can you believe I couldn't find anyone to goout with me) The guy I bought it off of assured me it was in mint, never had a prob yea right .the motor look really clean and looked like it was taken care of but I don't think so .Plus I also heard of parts hard to come by thats why I was thinking of repowering Whats the diff between a looper and crossflow?
