87 Drive Trim Pump Rebuild

The trim is cutting out on me intermintently. If i tap the trim motor it will start working again.<br /><br />Is the trim motor going bad? Should I troubleshootinge wiring to the battery first? Is a pump rebuild in order?<br /><br />Thanks in advance.

What happens if you just bypass the solenoids and put power directly to the motor? What I'm gettin' at is it the solenoids, a loose connection are really the motor?<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

From what i can tell there are two wires running out of the top of the trim motor. these wires run to who knows were. were would the solenoid(s) be located? From past experience It acts like a bad solenoid, but I didn't see any on the pump motor.

what gauge wire should I use to the batteries? 8, 10 or 12? Stainless wire or copper?

The relays are probably in a box inside the boat. The box may be screwed to the transom, that's where I put mine. Follow the wires from the motor. They should go to the relays. 10-12 gauge wire should work, you're just gonna check and see if the motor runs. I just looked at the schematic and there's only two wires to the motor, blue and green. Putting 12VDC to the blue wire should raise the l/u and power to the green should lower it.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

Hooty,<br /><br />I just tested the motor. One blue and one green from the pump to the black box on the transom. I ran two wires directly to the batteries and the trim motor works. I going to replace the two relays and see where that leads.<br /><br />I'll let you know.

Oh, by the way, when they mounted the sea drive on the transom they didn't leave enough room around the pump motor to remove the three bolts they hold the motor from the inside of the boat. That means if I need a new trim motor I'll have to remove the whole trim assembly from the outside. WHAT AN AHOLE!! LAZY LAZY LAZY<br /><br />If you want if done right, do it yourself!!

Well the relays aren't bad. Something upstream is not getting power. Any ideas?

It can only be the switch or the wires. Go to the switch and use a jumper wire instead of the switch contacts. If you can make it work with a jumper, replace the switch. If it still don' work, gotta be a broke wire or a bad connector somewhere.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

I've traced the wires to each switch...the one on the ob motor and the one on the throttle handle...all are connected, but neither switch works. the relay switch just clicks when you press either trim switch. The problem has to be between the trim motor and to where the wires that go to each switch come together. the only thing in between is the black box where the relay switches are located. the black box is getting 10.5 to 12.5 volts, I checked. I've replaced both relay switches. The only thing left to do is rewire the black box...right?<br /><br />Any suggestions????<br /><br />THANKS

the scematic is printed on each relay. the only thing I can do is rewire the female end of the plug and go from there.

Well, I rewired both relay plugs and it still doesn't work. The wiring shematic is as follows looking at the posts on the relay switch:<br /><br /> red<br /><br /> green/orange black black<br />(from trim button)<br /> <br /> green(trim motor)<br /><br />The other switch is wired identical except the green wires are blue/orange(switch) and blue(trim motor)<br /><br />I definately have power at the box so the problem has to be from the blue/orange wires to the switches, right?

I've rewired the whole trim system...the motor has a bad spot in it. When I tap the motor it will start running. So I'm going to replace the trim motor.<br /><br />As I posted previously, there is not enough room were the trim motor comes through the transom to get to the 3 bolts to remove the motor. Which means I have two options...<br /><br />1. try to enlarge the hole around the trim motor to get to the bolts...the transom is about 4 inches thick!<br /><br />or<br /><br />2. remove the trim unit from the outside of the transom. From what I can tell there are only 4 bolts holding the trim unit to the transom. obviously there is some sort of seal (gasket?) where the unit seats to prevent water from leaking into the boat.<br /><br />Does anyone have the procedure to remove the trim unit? (1987 sea drive bracket and trim)unit.

get a set of brushes for your motor instead of buying a new motor.i think your problem will go a way.and sorry no ideas for removing the motor

Thanks,<br /><br />A friend of mine suggested the same thing. I'll give it a try. Nothing to lose...worst case scenario is that I end up replacing the motor anyway.
