Hi, I have a newly acquired 1987 Evinrude 140 VRO. E140TLCUA Still using the VRO system. PO did a carb clean but did not disassemble them so I want to. I will get an oem manual shortly. Through my recent research of carb rebuild kits, I have found the rebuild kits are very basic looking. And through reading the forums I've read multiple times that its so important to remove the welch plugs to effectively clean all the passages. Well these carbs don't have any welch plugs in them. They're in the throttle bodies which I didn't plan on removing, not thinking I had to. So do I also need to remove and clean the throttle bodies and remove & replace those welch plugs? Or can I just R&R the carbs? Also these carbs are plastic.. Is carb cleaner going to hurt the plastic? If so what cleaning solution should I use? Some of the fuel lines look pre-bent. Will replacing them with ethanol friendly hoses cause restrictions in the bends or are there pre-bent hoses available?

Use carb cleaner in a spray can to check the channels in the throttle bodies. If any restrictions, then remove the plugs. What you definitely may need is new O-ring gaskets between carbs and throttle bodies which are normally not included in the kits. Use the original pre-formed hoses as they give less stress on the plastic nipples and less risk of breaking them!

What do these throttle bodies consist of? I think of it like a spacer like on a automobile carb.(Just an aluminum slab with holes..) Should I be removing the throttle body too to clean everything effectively?

Re: 87 Evinrude 140 carb rebuild question.

When servicing carbs (both metal and plastic), I use a mixture of 50/50 Pine-Sol and water and soak the parts overnight.

The next day just rinse in fresh water, dry with compressed air (including all orifices and passageways) and let air dry before reassembly.

The mixture will not harm plastic or rubber and is alot cheaper and enviro-friendly than carb cleaner and works like a charm.

If you're doing the carbs, for a few extra bucks do the throttle bodies as well.

When putting float bowls back on just snug the screws tight do not overtighten they have a tendency to warp if too tight

I'd go buy a gallon of BRP Engine Tuner and soak any carbs in that, plastic or metal. If you forget about them when soaking, no damage done. Rinse with water and blow out with compressed air.
