hi

I just bought a Bayliner Capri with a 225 Evinrude on it.On the first test run today the engine stalled and finally stopped. The engine idled and revved perfectly before it after about 3-5 minutes slowly died.
After the engine stopped I could get it running by pumping the bladder on the fuel line and chocking the engine, it will then run and rev when revving the engine in neutral, but when I put the engine in gear it slowly dies out and I have to do it all over again.Did all this aprox 20 time to get the boat to shore again:eek:spooky.Anyway,I will start in the fuel tank tomorrow, removing the fuel pickup and see if it is clogged and also check for water in the fuel tank, then move further to the bladder on the fuel line and check if this could be faulty.Any other ideas on what could be the problem.??I can only get the problem to occur after revving the engine in gear for aprox 3-5 minutes, the engine never fails, stutters or stalls when idling.

rebuild/clean carbs if you have not done so. Very likely your high speed jets are clogged

hi

Thanx.I will try that, but isnt it weird that all carbs are clogged? The engine is dying on all sylinders.not only on one or two. This is why I thougt that something could be wrong with the fuel supply to all carbs.

You said "After the engine stopped I could get it running by pumping the bl"

but the question which will poit to the problem is whether you KEEP it running by pumping the fuel bulb. If yes, then its the pump.

But I would rebuild the carbs anyway if you don't know for certain they are good. All it takes is a lean run due dirty clogged carbs to fry a piston.

yes I can keep the engine running to a certain degree by pumping the bladder, it will not run like it should but it runs.I will have a look at the pump and clean my carbs while im at it.

Re: 87 Evinrude 225 stalling

Well, today I think I found some problems with the engine.#1:The fuel filter was turned upside down:confused:.Think the previous owner made a mistake here.By turning the filter the wrong way it must be full at all times in order to get a steady stream of fuel to the carbs. The filter was turned so the cap with the fitting for the hose that goes to the pump and carbs was on top, when it in the manual says the cap should be turned down.Do you guys agree with me that this i s correct and that this could have caused the engine to stall.?

after I turned the filter the right way the engine started more easy than it ever has, but still I am a bit worried because the fuel level in the filter is very low when the engine is idling.does anyone know how high the fuel should sit in the filter when the engine is running?Smebody told me that the filter should be half full at all times. Is this correct?

Then to problem number two. After the engine had been idling for a couple of minutes it suddenly started studdering and it was quite obvious that it was missing 1,2 or maybye 3 sylinders.I hooked up my timing light and it was easy to see that none of the 3 sylinders on the left side was firing. Then when the engine was still idling I took the back of a scew driver and tapped the top of the left CDI/powerbox and BANG!, all 3 sylinders came to life emediatly:D.It then runs fine for a couple of seconds before it happens all over again, So,I guess I can be pretty sure that the cdi box is shot then?Is there any point in removing the soft clear stuff on the back of it and re solder all the solder points on the print or should I just order a new one right away.Is there any brand of cdi boxes that are better than others?

I have checked all ground connections.I ordered a new cdi box.Hope this solves it.Does anyone have the manual for the Evinrude 225 engine?I would like to know if the direction of the fuel filter that is in the picture of the 225 in the book is correct, that is with the screw cap facing downwards. It looks a bit odd and it was turned the other way around on my engine...

Re: 87 Evinrude 225 stalling

Hi again guys. The latest update on my motor is that a changed my left Powerpack for a new one and have run the motor for several days now without any issues at all, that was until today when the motor failed on me once more.:(
Took the boat out of the water an placed the motor in a test tank. After running the engine for aprox 15 minutes it started kicking and not wanting to rev in gear.Hooked up my timing light like last time only to see that now all 3 right side sylinders where missing a spark when the kicking and sputtering started!!WTF.Has anyone seen two powerpack fail almost at the same time before or is there something else that can make both of them malfunction say the stator or something?according to the engine manual they do not really share any connections as far as I can see,so I almost want to believe that it is possible that this Powerpack is dead too...

this video somewhat shows the timing light when the problem occures:

Re: 87 Evinrude 225 stalling

Got the problem sorted by installing a new power box.I have run the motor for several hours without it stopping now. However, im having some problems when throttling up from idle to get the boat into plane. The motor just wants to bog down and stop and then suddenly comes to life and runs perfectly.Im having no issues when I get the boat into plane. The problem seems to occure from low to mid throttle.Any ideas?
