Unfortunately I don't have a service manual yet and need some advice regarding removing the starter from an '87 Evinrude 90 horse V4. My question is what I need to remove to get the top bolt out, the one on the left side of the starter, toward the carb? Does the carb and air intake have to come off? The problem is that the one bolt is too long to remove because it butts up against the electrical components bolted to the carb/air bank.

I'm thinking of simply unscrewing the bolt as far as I can and then cutting the bolt so I can remove the rest of the bolt, and then replacing it with a shorter one. It seems to me that that bolt wouldn't need to be as long as it is, and shortening it by 1/4 inch or so wouldn't hurt as there would still be plenty of threads holding once it's screwed in.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance,

Mark
Minneapolis, MN
